A 15-year-old threw stones. Israeli soldiers shot him dead.

On Friday, 28 April 2023, at around 2:00 P.M., soldiers arrived at the Khirbet Tuqu’ archeological site, which residents of the Palestinian village of Tuqu’ use for recreational purposes. When youths who were at the site noticed the soldiers, about twenty of them threw stones at them from a distance of about 150 meters. The soldiers fired live rounds at the youths, but no one was hit. About half an hour later, Mustafa Sabah (15) and another Palestinian arrived at the scene. Sabah picked up a few stones, ran toward the soldiers, stopped about 50 meters away from them and threw three stones at them.

The soldiers fired at least six shots at him. Two bullets hit Sabah in the chest, and he fell face down. Another young man was slightly injured in the knee. The soldiers kept shooting. The young men shouted at them that someone had been hurt, and shortly after, the shooting stopped. It was only then that Sabah was taken to a clinic in the village, where he was pronounced dead.

The soldiers who shot Sabah were well protected. They used live fire, despite being in no danger, and kept shooting at the youths even after hitting Sabah, still facing no danger. The IDF Spokesperson did say a military police investigation had been launched, but this statement does not imply that the military believes an investigation is necessary because the soldiers or their commanders might have broken the law.

The opposite is true: the IDF Spokesperson regularly releases such statements in order to deflect criticism and keep up the pretense that the Israeli military investigates itself, such that there is no need for external interventions. These investigations, however, as B’Tselem and other human rights organizations have repeatedly shown, are nothing more than a whitewashing mechanism that allows the military to continue implementing the same illegal, immoral lethal policy without interruption or accountability.
