River Ridge Apartments Deluxe Countryside Living Near Golf Course in Asheville, North Carolina

I love my apartment and I love the location, but I distrust the leasing company. They have lied and given me the wrong information several times. River Ridge changed ownership a couple of years ago and it is now going downhill fast. I am a senior and I had hoped this would be my last place, but now I am considering moving. But the new people are really just interested in making money. They seem to forget that this is someone’s home.

The very first day I moved here from another city and they increased the rent on my apartment $100 from what was quoted over the phone. I had a moving van on the way and could not do anything about it.

I am not feeling safe here anymore. I have had troubles with other residents, including one downstairs neighbor that made my life miserable. The office said to call the cops. I was afraid this would escalate the issues. This has happened to other residents who had trouble with neighbors. The office will not get rid of them until it the cops are involved and people are getting hurt. We do have a resource officer but he is trigger happy. He threaten to kill a dog what was not on a lease and had an incident at a kids place where he pulled out his guy on a couple of other customers. He has made nasty comments to residents near his apartment.

We have many issues with homeless and the office cannot do anything about them. Some of these issues are coming from the shopping center who also will not do anything about them, along with the cops because they need the owners of the land to complain. I have a homeless person pee on building next to my back porch. I drove out of the complex the other day, looked to my left to see a homeless person taking a shit. For the last week I have been woken up by the fighting and yelling of a homeless couple so near my apartment that I can hear them talk. This week alarms went off for two nights and several hours from stores in the shopping center in the middle of the night. Right now I just want one night of sleep.

They get people upset over changes that they want to make such as the garden area and them one year later they have done nothing. Now they have changed the lease in several places, so that if you did not go over it word by word you would not find the changes. The area where we were paying the rent plus fees which is labeled “Rent and Charges” is supposedly now only the rent, but it does not say so. No wording has changed on the front signed page, only small text changes to a couple of addendum.

We have break-in and stolen cars. My car was hit and had $3000 worth of damage. No one was found to be responsible. Others have had their cars hit. We have had people sneak into the pool and club house at night. We had people knock on doors in the middle of the night. Even druggies running around almost naked and making much noise.

We had had several issues with apartments that have many people going in and out, or even living there. These we suspect involve drugs. There was a shooting here last year over drugs. A few people do not follow the rules such as dogs on leases but they seem to get away with it while others do not.

The rent is high for the area especially when you consider these are almost 30 years old. They have done some updating for a few of the apartments but then they just charge you more. Every year our rent goes up at least $50.00, no matter how long you have lived there or if you pay rent on time. There are several seniors like me, who would love to stay here for the rest of our lives, but the office is making this impossible. You would think that they would encourage long term, reliable, quiet residents to stay, but they do not. We actually have residents that have been here a decade and more who are now looking to move.

They made a mistake on my lease and are now trying to get me to pay. I am refusing because they lied to me about why there were changes in the lease. No one else has had this issue, but me. Now they are refusing to cash my rent check because they say it is too little even though it is the amount on the lease.

Now I hear they are going to try to sell these apartments because they are not making enough money.
