109 Year Old Veteran and His Secrets to Life Will Make You Smile

Meet Richard Overton, America’s oldest veteran. In this lively 2016 short film by Matt Cooper and Rocky Conly, hear the whiskey-drinking, cigar-smoking supercentenarian reveal his secrets to a long life.

At the time the documentary film was made, Richard Overton was 110 years old. He had lived in his self-built house for more than six decades. But now living on his own wasn’t as easy as it once was. Without anyone to care for him, it was looking like he would have to enter an assisted living home. That would be a move which relatives believe will send him to his grave. But would the kindness of strangers help Overton to remain in the house he loves?

Overton was born on May 11, 1906, in Bastrop County, Texas. His great-great-grandfather was John Overton, a renowned American banker and politician who served as a judge at the Superior Court of Tennessee. What’s more, Overton is also distantly related to Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States.

With war being waged across the world, Overton enlisted in the United States Army on September 3, 1940. As a new recruit, he was assigned to duty in the South Pacific. One year later, he watched as the Japanese sank American ships in Pearl Harbor, and the United States entered World War II.

On 11 May 2016, Overton became a supercentenarian, and the oldest living American veteran. On 22 July 2017, Overton became the oldest living American man. Overton was hospitalized for pneumonia in December 2018, and upon recovery, he was placed in a rehabilitation center, where he died on 27 December 2018, age recorded as 112 years, 230 days.
