I have from time to time had the mythical DOE Q clearance it is only a authorization to request specific information concerning nuclear materials.
The Q part came from our use of Apple Macintosh Plus NIST EMG hardened computers to access the filing system.
The Federal filing system in the 1980s was called FS710 with specific colors representing the level of authorization necessary to view or copy files.
Green being confidential and red secret orange special access, as 307110 I held a Orange Q while working for various projects.
The reason Q in post 007 became a designation of a file or clearance type was due to the fact that the RS-1 filing system was little endian and the Macs where big endian. This caused the raw data on the terminal to read 017SF instead of FS710 the asci terminals would translate the first byte as Q so when you located block of data it would start with QSF and end with 909F.
The little macs would swap the file byte order and allow the reading of the documentation.
