Nephilim... Fallen Ones ?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Gen. 6: 1-7,  “And it cometh to pass that mankind have begun to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters have been born to them, and sons of God see the daughters of men that they [are] fair, and they take to themselves women of all whom they have chosen. And Jehovah saith, `My Spirit doth not strive in man — to the age; in their erring they [are] flesh:’ and his days have been an hundred and twenty years.

The fallen ones were in the earth in those days, and even afterwards when sons of God come in unto daughters of men, and they have borne to them — they [are] the heroes, who, from of old, [are] the men of name.  And Jehovah seeth that abundant [is] the wickedness of man in the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart only evil all the day;

and Jehovah repenteth that He hath made man in the earth, and He grieveth Himself — unto His heart. And Jehovah saith, `I wipe away man whom I have prepared from off the face of the ground, from man unto beast, unto creeping thing, and unto fowl of the heavens, for I have repented that I have made them.’  (Young’s Literal Translation, bold emphasis is mine.)

“Nephilim”, Hebrew from Naphal, meaning “he fell”.   The word is not used in the English. So why have so many believed it to be necessary?

Clarke’s commentary on verse 4 states,

“The Septuagint translate the original word by γιγαντες, which literally signifies earth-born, and which we, following them, term giants, without having any reference to the meaning of the word, which we generally conceive to signify persons of enormous stature. But the word when properly understood makes a very just distinction between the sons of men and the sons of God; those were the nephilim, the fallen earth-born men, with the animal and devilish mind. These were the sons of God, who were born from above; children of the kingdom, because children of God. Hence we may suppose originated the different appellatives given to sinners and saints; the former were termed γιγαντες, earth-born, and the latter, ἁγιοι, i.e. saints, persons not of the earth, or separated from the earth.”  (The antecedent of “those” are sons of men.  The antecedent of “these” are the sons of God. Again, bold emphasis is mine. )

For some reason which I suppose is intended to increase book sales for thrill-seeking, spine-chilling, goose-bumpy needy readers, the Hebrew word “nephilim” has been lifted out of the Hebrew text and straight into some English versions of the Bible without translation.   Transliteration, using the original word without translating it, is an improper method of translation.  It has a purpose of hiding the truth, or deceiving the ignorant and uneducated.

Did the translators of the NIV or NASB or any other version lift out the Hebrew word “gibborim” for heros?  Why stop at the use of “nephilim” in verse 4 if they want to teach us Hebrew?  Or, better yet, why did they not continue using the Hebrew “nephilim” every other time  the English word “fallen” was written in the scriptures?

We always check other verses within the texts to see how the same word is used, and between Old and New Testaments, as the Old Testament is the reflection or shadow of things to come in the New Testament, which is the fulfillment of the Old.  In the New Testament we find the following:

Gal. 5:3, 4, ” 3For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.”

Rev. 2:5, Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.”

2 Thes. 2:3, ” Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The thought is the same as expressed in Rom.3:23, ”For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

The fallen ones were those men who fell from grace, who lived lives of sin, and gave into the lusts of the flesh.  They were not, as some suppose, fallen angels.  Angels cannot have sexual intercourse.

Matt. 22:30, ” For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.”

In other words, they don’t have sex, which God established as a joyful union between husband and wife, as any other use of sex is outlawed as fornication and adultery.  So, marriage is the blessed joining of man and woman which God provided.   And, therefore in heaven there is no sex as there is no marriage and no procreation!

The Hebrew word “nephilim” cannot be referring to angels, since angels cannot procreate.. have children.

The righteous men, who were of the line of the faithful Seth (Abel was dead) were the Sons of God.  They made the mistake of looking upon the beautiful daughters of the evil and wicked men, the fallen ones.  The daughters of evil men did not know God, and did not follow after God.  So, they brought evil ways to their husbands, and children, so that after a time, the people on earth became universally wicked.  Eventually, God repented that He had made man, because of all the wicked and evil that filled the earth.

So, the first seven verses of Genesis 6 is background, explanation, and is the reason that God caused the earth to be filled with water to destroy the wicked. He was letting us know in the record why He took such a drastic step.

There wasn’t any angelic intercourse with women going on.  There was just the usual progression of wicked people giving into sin, and the lusts of the flesh, much as we are grieved with today.

Let’s also talk about the “giants” for a moment.  In verse 4, Young’s Literal Translation rightfully says “fallen ones” but the King James renders it incorrectly as “giants”.  This is why you need to check with Young’s Literal Translation from time to time.   And, the word “heros” is rendered “mighty men, men of renown” in the King James. Clarke explains,

” gibborim, which we render mighty men, signifies properly conquerors, heroes, from גבר gabar, “he prevailed, was victorious.” and השם אנשי anshey hashshem, “men of the name,” ανθρωποι ονομαστοι, Septuagint; the same as we render men of renown, renominati, twice named, as the word implies, having one name which they derived from their fathers, and another which they acquired by their daring exploits and enterprises.

It may be necessary to remark here that our translators have rendered seven different Hebrew words by the one term giants, viz., nephilim, gibborim, enachim, rephaim, emim, and zamzummim ; by which appellatives are probably meant in general persons of great knowledge, piety, courage, wickedness, etc., and not men of enormous stature, as is generally conjectured.”

Young’s Literal Translation is an easy short cut for the correct translation into the English.  You can find it at www.biblegateway.com.

Consider that the people before the flood were closer to the creation than we are.  They lived longer than we do, which is why in verse 3 God limits the age span to 120 years.  He is tired of striving with mankind by this point.  Before the flood, the people had better air quality, better food, their DNA was purer.  There probably were men of greater height than we are today, of a size that we would consider giant.  That doesn’t really have anything to do with the subject of the first 7 verses of Genesis 6.  It is not a valid translation of the “fallen ones” and should never have been used by the Septuagint text.  Do not let it confuse you.

There is no need for the use of the Hebrew word “nephilim” in the English translation, and can only have been used for sensationalist book sales, to promote one version of the Bible over another.  Be wary when you see these kinds of tricks.  Check the better versions, and Clarke’s commentaries first.  It is a form of a lie, and is promoting an error that is sweeping through the world, and is a distortion of God’s word.   There were no fallen angels having sex with women!

Gina……..you need to do a little more research on the fallen angles. Once they were “fallen” as is said, they came to earth not as angles but as men. Now answer me this, were there female angles? I know you believe, (I hope you do), what you say, but dig a little deeper.

      • Gina

What’s your source for your belief that fallen angels became men? The word angel in the scriptures means messengers. The point of Matt.22:30 is that angels do not have gender. I will research what ever source you want to provide, and let you know.

….In whose image are humans created? Elohim…..God and the angels. The bible says they came into Adam’s daughters…..gina and Louis say they did not….I take the bible’s version. the rest of the story makes no sense without it. Maybe that’s why nothing they say makes any sense.

      • Louis

Gina is not wrong, Preston, you are. Fallen angels do not and cannot have sexual relations with human females.

Angels are incorporeal spirits — meaning they have no physical bodies attached to them. When angels are commanded by God to assume human form, the bodies they assume are not composed of living tissue, but are composed of compressed atmosphere.

Angels and humans are two completely different and incompatible species of creatures. Under no circumstances can they mate and conceive offspring.

You need to read about the true nature of angels in the SUMMA THEOLOGICA, where everything anyone needs to know about angels is compiled and explained. Most people have very little understanding about the true nature of angels.

        • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

          “…are composed of compressed atmosphere.”

Louis will provide a verse to substantiate that claim in 3… 2… 1… never.

“Under no circumstances can they mate and conceive offspring.”

So you say. The Word says differently. As usual, if Louis is speaking, he is contradicting the written Word.

“You need to read about the true nature of angels in the SUMMA THEOLOGICA…”

That is to say: forget everything you’ve read about angels in Scripture. Thomas Aquinas knows all there is to know about these matters. He’s the expert. Not God.

“Most people have very little understanding about the true nature of angels.”

          That’s a fact, Jack.

“There wasn’t any angelic intercourse with women going on. There was just the usual progression of wicked people giving into sin, and the lusts of the flesh, much as we are grieved with today.”

While also believing the very concept of angelic procreation very unBiblical, and that the “giants” are bad, powerful and tyrannical men raised evil, there’s a further point. Given most all believe the origin of demons is fallen angels, who rebelled with Satan, demons can possess people. Since the world became given over to great evil, prior to the flood, there’s actually no reason to believe there would not have been heavy demonic influence on mankind, perverting men’s spirits. Since an evil spirit(s) can live in people and pull the strings (Luke 22:3, Mark 5:9), even animals (Matthew 8:31), there could very well have been an epidemic of demons come down to live in and through man. Just a thought.

      • Gina

Like the devil made me do it? The wicked become wicked by letting sin rule their lives, and eventually the continuation in sin takes over and hardens the heart so that the soul shrivels and dies. Demonic possession, or just living in sin? The serpent, as Satan, told a lie, and Eve believed the lie, and took action that she wanted to take, which was a rationalization. Satan tempts us, we take the action.

I believe that demons were let loose during Christ’s ministry on earth in the first century A.D. in order to show the power and glory of God. In every instance the actions of the man were not normal, and they could not carry on a normal lifestyle. They were marked and outcast and kept away from the population as they were dangerous to be around. So, in the first century the demonology was a special event.

There are others who posit that all demonology was merely man’s way of labeling sickness and things they could not explain before modern medicine. I don’t quite buy that, especially in light of certain miracles Jesus performed in the NT. But, there may have been many people who were tempted by demons during the first 1600 years after creation. Whichever, through temptation or simple desire, they made the decision to be evil, to commit evil acts. Free will.

Some of these questions may have to wait till we get home, and can check out God’s library. For, now I check all reliable sources for best information and stick with them.

“Like the devil made me do it?”

Quite right we have our own rebellious natures, and there’s truly no excuse. On the other hand, we must never underestimate evil spiritual influences and be vigilant. Having a gift of some discernment in these things, I’ve many times seen people under such influences, which can be powerful. Scripture sees it for what it is:

          Ephesians 6

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

          • maxxy

…Parablammo…You used a word in your post, that is of much importance to this dialogue: discernment. Spirituality is the key. Its like this….informing an ‘earthly man’ of his spirituality, and the ‘otherworldly’ character of the spiritual “habitat”, is as impossible as fitting that scriptural “camel” through the eye of that ‘needle’. It truly takes spiritual discernment, to understand that.

Gina, You are incredibly misinformed on the subject you are attempting to teach. For starters, In Genesis 6:2 the sons of God (Bene Ha Elohim) means divine ones/angels, not regular men fallen from grace. Genesis 6:4 giants (Nephil) from the root word gigantes in Greek, means earthborn. The fact that they were huge is really coincedental.
You stated that they should use the word Nephilim in every other place where the word fall or fallen is used. I’ll give you examples of why that won’t work. In fact I’ll use your verses as the examples:
Galatians 5: 3-4 (fallen from grace) the word there is ekpipto (not Nephilim) which means to fall from or out of a thing, to lose it. The word in Revelation 2:5 is the same word and meaning.
2Thess. 2:3 falling away is the word apostasia ( defection, apostasy) not Nephilim.
Jude 6 describes the angels leaving their habitation (oiketerion) which is their heavenly body or dwelling place, describing quite obviously their fall. 2 Peter 2: 4-5 talks of God not sparing the angels that sinned, which once again is obviously talking about the fallen angels who sinned by taking earthly wives.
I searched for the version of the translation you are using and don’t know where you got it, but you need to do more studying and less teaching of ignorant untruths. By the way, how do you know angels can’t have sex? Have you talked to one lately…I doubt it.

      • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

        Pulltabjunkie asked:

“By the way, how do you know angels can’t have sex? Have you talked to one lately…I doubt it.”

Even to ask that question is to concede points Bible believers don’t have to concede. Here’s what is written:

        From Genesis 6:4

…the sons of God ***came in*** unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them…

We find this term applied in a wide variety of usages throughout the Scriptures. This is the same term used in the Old Testament whenever the phrase ‘go out and to come in’ is used.

        CAME IN = H935 בּוא bô’

A primitive root; to go or come (in a WIDE VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS): – abide, apply, attain, X be, befall, + besiege, bring (forth, in, into, to pass), call, carry, X certainly, (cause, let, thing for) to come (against, in, out, upon, to pass), depart, X doubtless again, + eat, + employ, (cause to) enter (in, into, -tering, -trance, -try), be fallen, fetch, + follow, get, give, go (down, in, to war), grant, + have, X indeed…

        Take note the following:

        [IN-]VADE…

…lead, lift [up], mention, pull in, put, resort, run (down), send, set, X (well) stricken [in age], X surely, take (in), way.

The point is this: Nothing is written which demands an act of sexual congress, as we count such intercourse. Perhaps that is what happened, and there is NOTHING anywhere in the written Word which precludes that possibility. But Scripture does not require this possibility is what in fact occurred. What we are told is that the Sons of God CAME IN unto the daughters of men.

He who imagines that powerful entities from another world are limited in their capacity to GENERATE offspring in this world, by availing themselves of the daughters of men…

…invents limitations where there are none, enfeebles his understanding in such a way that he eliminates from consideration ALL of the other conceivable methods whereby supernatural entities might impregnate human women, and vainly pretends access to knowledge which has been deliberately withheld from us all.

We see how the camp of our Enemy worships the phallus and worships the ‘generative principle.’ And perhaps they do so according to a straight-forward and mundane understanding of these things. Perhaps the mundane physical are the means by which the angels in Satan’s service accomplished the deed. But perhaps the symbol (the phallus/obelisk) and the principle should not be understood in so limited a fashion as to include only the base and the mundane physical means.

The Word says ‘invade.’ The Word says ‘CAME IN.’

Who are any of us to place false limits on the Word?

Excellent. About time someone posts something that is Biblical and not all twisted by Satan’s lies.

    • they.pierced.My.hands.and.My.feet.

Much evidence of giants on he earth, both in ancient history, and in the present.

And then there are the giant sasquatch people, though they are not of this
      discussion.

    • CAPTAIN CHAOS!!

      Matthew 22:30

For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

In summary of which, Gina writes:

“In other words, [Angels] don’t have sex…”

But of course, that is an outlandish presumption, based on nothing Messiah said in the above verse. Messiah says absolutely nothing in the above verse, which disqualifies from consideration the possibility of Angels procreating with human women via physical sexual congress. Moreover, nothing is said in the entirety of Scripture which eliminates that possibility from legitimate consideration.

“And, therefore in heaven there is no sex as there is no marriage and no procreation!”

And that may be true, for all that appears. But what? Here on EARTH is where the deed in question occurred. And were the perpetrators of this great crime Fallen Angels?

They weren’t fallen until they committed their crime.

The Angels in HEAVEN do not do such things.

But just where are the Angels which perpetrated this criminal act? Are they in Heaven?

…God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment…

Angels in Heaven, they are not.
