Jesus Was Married, Had 2 Kids, Claims Controversial New Book

Jesus was married and had 2 kids, claim the authors of a controversial new book due out Wednesday.

“The Lost Gospel: Decoding the Ancient Text That Reveals Jesus’ Marriage to Mary the Magdalene,” is based on an ancient text composed on treated animal skin brought to the U.K. in 1847 from an Egyptian monastery and housed in the British Museum. The text, the Ecclesiastical History of Zacharias Rhetor, was translated from the original Aramaic by professor Barrie Wilson and writer Simcha Jacobovici, who claim in their new book that it reveals the secret family life of Jesus Christ.

“There is now written evidence that Jesus was married to Mary the Magdalene and that they had children together,” the books says in its opening passages, according to The Washington Post

“Gathering dust in the British Library is a document that takes us into the missing years of Jesus’s life…. According to the document that we uncovered, sometime during this period he became engaged, got married, had sexual relations, and produced children. Before anyone gets his/her theological back up, keep in mind that we are not attacking anyone’s theology. We are reporting on text.”

Many in the scholarly community aren’t holding their breath over Jacobovici’s latest “finding,” as he has been accused of promoting hoaxes in the past.

In 2002, Jacobovici released a documentary on the ossuary of James — Jesus’ brother. It was soon debunked, however, and the Discovery Channel named it one of the top 10 scientific hoaxes of all time.

“It is always bad form to attack a theory by condemning its proponents, but Simcha Jacobovichi is a notorious peddler of misleading theories,” Greg Carey, a professor at Lancaster Theological Seminary, wrote in a Huffington Post article criticizing Jacobovici’s forthcoming book.

“He promoted an ossuary as containing the bones of Jesus’ brother James, a theory that has been disconfirmed. He also developed a documentary that claimed to unveil the Jesus family tomb, also refuted by experts, and even claims to have uncovered the nails used in Jesus’ crucifixion. It’s a shame that the media ever pays attention to him, at least when he’s talking about Jesus.”
