Lies of The Roman Catholic Church - Part III; Baptism is NOT Sprinkling

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Once upon a time everyone knew that immersion in water was required to be added to the body of Christ, to be saved!  Even the Roman Catholic Church knew it. Jesus himself gave us the example when He went to his second cousin, John the “Baptist”, son of Zacharias, to be “baptized”. (Matt. 3: 13-17; Mark 1:9-10; Luke 3:21) John immersed all who came to him in the river Jordan. (Matt. 3:6)   All of the examples in Acts of “baptism” by the Apostles were immersion in water.  (Acts 8:38-39)  Every time you read the word “baptism” in the New Testament you need to think in English, immersion.

The purpose of the immersion is the participation in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.  It is an outward sign of an inward renewal, an inward decision to live for Christ, and follow Him.  Sprinkling is not a burial into Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. (Col. 2:12, Rom. 6:3-4; 2Cor 4:10-16)

The Roman Catholic Church practiced the correct form until the 12th century A.D., until it became inconvenient.  It is said that Eusebius “baptized” Emperor Constantine on his deathbed in 337 A.D. by pouring water over him.

There were occasional instances of a practice of “clinical baptism.”  The Catholics would allow sprinkling or pouring of water over the forehead in cases of sick babies or dying adults, or when there just wasn’t any available pool of water.  So, the Council of Ravena decided in 1311 A.D. that they were indifferent to the method; that either immersion or sprinkling was sufficient.  There are many articles which document the change from immersion to sprinkling in the Roman Catholic Church, and are easily found.  Here are three such.

“Sprinkling as a form of baptism took the place of immersion after a few centuries in the early Church, not from any established rule, but by common consent, and it has since been very generally practiced in all but the Greek and Baptist churches, which insist upon immersion.”  (McClintock and Strong’s Cyclopedia, Art. Sprinkling, Vol. IX, p. 968).

“Sprinkling was still (in the period of 323 – 692) confined to Baptismus Clinicorum (clinical baptism) and was first generally used in the West in infant baptism in the 12th century, while the East still retained the custom of immersion.” (Kurts, a German Lutheran Historian, in Church History, Vol. I, p. 367)

“The Scripture makes it clear enough that water is to be used, but it is not so plain at first sight that the sprinkling or pouring of water will suffice. In Apostolic times the body of the baptized person was immersed, for St. Paul looks on this immersion as typifying burial with Christ, and speaks of baptism as a bath (Rom. 6:4, Eph. 5:26)….even St. Thomas, in the 13th century speaks of baptism by immersion as the common practice of his time. Still, the rubric of the Roman Ritual, which states that baptism can be validly given by immersion, infusion, or aspersion, is fully justified by tradition.” (Catholic Dictionary, Art. Bapt., p. 60).

The question remains; why did the translators of the 1599 Geneva Bible, and the King James 1611 version transliterate the Greek words “baptizo” and “batisma” into the English?  Why have all translations since continued the use of the anglicized version of the Greek words?  How was John the “Baptist” really named in the Syriac texts?

A true translation would not have required a Greek replacement.  They lifted the Greek word and put it into an English translation of the Bible.  The verb “baptizo” became “baptize”, and the noun “baptisma” became “baptism” in the English language.  Here are the meanings of “baptizo” from reliable lexicons, as used in the original Koine (common) Greek at the time of Christ, in the first century A.D

Baptizo: “To make a thing dipped or dyed. To immerse for a religious purpose” (A Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament, E.W. Bullinger).

Baptizo: “Dip, immerse, mid. Dip oneself, wash (in non-Christian lit. also ‘plunge, sink, drench, overwhelm. . . .’)” (A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, Arndt and Gingrich, p. 131).

Baptizo: “immersion, submersion” (A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, Grimm-Thayer, p. 94).

Baptizo: “to dip, immerse, sink” (Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament, Abbott-Smith, p. 74).

Baptizo: “dip, plunge” (A Greek-English Lexicon, Liddell & Scott, p. 305).

Baptizo: “consisting of the process of immersion, submersion and emergence (from bapto, to dip)” (Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words).

Baptizo: “immerse, sumberge. The peculiar N.T. and Christian use of the word to denote immersion, submersion for a religious purpose” (Biblico-Theological Lexicon of the New Testament Greek, Cremer).

Baptizo: “to dip, immerse; to cleanse or purify by washing” (The New Analytical Greek Lexicon, Perschbacher, p. 66).

Baptizo: “to dip, to immerse, to sink. . . . There is no evidence that Luke or Paul and the other writers of the New Testament put upon this verb meanings not recognized by the Greeks” (Greek and English Lexicon, Sophocles).

The Greek word “baptizo” comes from the primary verb “bapto”  which means to overwhelm, to cover wholly with a fluid.   Someone reading the original Koine Greek texts of the scriptures would have understood it as immersion, submersion, to dunk or sink, etc.

F.H. Chase explains, “In English we translate the Greek word baptizein. When we use the word “baptize” we think at once and we think only of the religious rite. Apart from that rite the word has no meaning for us. It is simply and solely a religious technical term. But the Aramaic Christian when he used the Aramaic word, and the Greek Christian when he used the Greek word, would never in this particular application of the term lose sight of its primary and proper signification “to immerse,” “to plunge in or into”,  and he continues

”In their versions of the New Testament the Syriac and the Egyptian Christians translated the word baptizein. Latin-speaking Christians, though like ourselves they commonly transliterated it (baptizare), yet sometimes . . . used as its equivalent the Latin verb tingere. What if we dare to follow their example and, instead of transliterating it, venture to translate it—Baptizontes autous eis to onoma, “immersing them into the Name”? So surely a Greek-speaking Christian would understand the words. He would regard the divine Name as the element, so to speak, into which the baptized is plunged. Thus the outward rite is seen to be an immediate parable of a great spiritual reality.  (“The Lord’s Command to Baptize,” The Journal of Theological Studies, July, 1905, p. 503).  (Bold emphasis is mine.)

The reason we are stuck in continued arguments about what constitutes “baptism” with the denominational world is that the translators from the original Greek texts were afraid.  By the time the Bible was translated into the English in the 14th and 16th centuries A.D., too many powerful people, such as King James, had already been sprinkled under the practice of the Church of England as learned and approved from the Roman Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Church has allowed a practice of sprinkling as a substitution for immersion.  They have changed the form of “baptism” as directed by God in its original practice by John the “Immersor”, and the Apostles.

If you have not been immersed for the remission of sins, you have not been added to the body of Christ.  You cannot put on Christ, nor be covered and cleansed by the blood of Christ without it.  (Gal. 3:27; 1 John 1:7; Eph. 2:13; Heb. 9:14)  You will not be added to the book of life without it. (Rev. 20:15)

Consider for a moment the simple analogy of a father who tells his son that he will give the son $5 if he sweeps the sidewalk.  The son tells his father, “I believe you.”  But he doesn’t sweep the sidewalk.  Does the father give him the $5?  No. (All of those who have believed that you only need to say a “saving prayer of faith”, pay attention!)  Or, the son just sweeps part of the sidewalk.  Has he done what the father asked?  No.  The agreement was not completed by the action.  Promise, and consideration.  No shoes, no service.

There is a perfect agreement with the promise of remission of sins, and it contains the consideration, the action of completed contract.  God’s offer is out there.   His call of the gospel is for everyone.  But, we have to answer the call.  We have the obligation and duty to perform a function that God demands.  If you do not complete the agreement, the promise cannot be given.

Mark 16:16, “He that believeth and is immersed in water shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” (KJV, as it truly should have been translated)

The Roman Catholic Church has changed God’s word concerning “baptism” – immersion – and have lied to the people again.  They are deceiver and liars, and therefore are none of God.  (John 8:44)  They have no authority from God.

      Question for all catholics

Please name one doctrine Jesus Christ taught that has not been changed by Rome.

the Sabbath changed to the day of the sun.
God’s Feast were cast aside as Jewish
      dunking to sprinkling
Passover to easter, the name of a pagan goddess
      Idols are now worshiped
      Mary is elevated above Christ
Peter and the popes are head of church not the ROCK of our salvation Jesus Christ
the rosery is taught to all because god love to hear the same words over and over and over
most apostles were married, catholic priest must be pedophiles
God the Father’s Spirit is now a ghost
Going to heaven is now the reward
pergatory and burning in hell for ever was invented to keep the folks in fear and under control
It now takes hundreds of years to become a Saint and only a very few make it
The catholic’s are sitting on trillions of dollars of wealth and their people in poverty

these are just a few of the abominations created/invented by gentile pagan Rome
This is not the Ecclesia of Jesus Christ — HE would have nothing to do with it, it is 100% pagan.

The pope is making ready to move to Jerusalem, Shimon Peres gave Jerusalem to the church long ago and now it is being prepared for him and will be turned over very soon. This or another pope will sit on a throne in Jerusalem and work miracles. The catholic church will soon be followed by the entire world.

Keep and eye on Georg Ganswein

I’ve heard rumors and rumblings of a plan for the pope to unit Christians, Muslims, and Jews into one world religion. Don’t think they have a snowball’s chance in hell of pulling that off. But, I don’t put anything past their arrogance.

        • Gus Fung

He’ll get more than he bargained for if the pope tries to put his hand on my “unit” or “pull that off”

          • Mr. Chet Friend

Bad Day, to you FOOL fung, the bin christowhore!
Have you eaten your Flesh from the body of christ, today, you Cannibal, you!
Oh, I know, I know, it is ONLY symbolic in eating the body of christ (chew, chew, chew), you truly weird, and CREEPT judep-christo-FREAK of ameriiiSCUM!

You my friend appear to be a bad actor and of decreasing usefulness to your handlers.

I bet you have an egg mcmuffin wrapper on your desk right now.

            • Pix

I know what you mean, even symbolic cannibalism is absolutely disgusting. Makes you wonder at the mind set of people who would dream up such base uncivilised barbarianism, it’s basically a power trip. but then again it’s only to be expected from a death cult religion that has so little regard for life and the living.

            • Gus Fung

You are so hot when you are flustered Pix. You seem stuck in the past. I can get you over the hump.

Quote”Makes you wonder at the mind set of people who would dream up such base uncivilised barbarianism, it’s basically a power trip. but then again it’s only to be expected from a death cult religion that has so little regard for life and the living.”

What do you think about the cults TODAY that encourage their most vulnerable and helpless members to immolate themselves with gasoline?

Do they pass your “regard for life and the living”?

            • Anonymous

If the cannibalism is symbolic, then it’s not even cannibalism, is symbolic! It’s actually a most deep and ingenious statement of the Lord, that we must eat His flesh and drink His blood, meant to reflect the repulsiveness of cannibalism.

The Lord Jesus was stating you have to participate in His death, receive His death, have to participate in His shed blood, for remission of sins and salvation: receive His murdered body and spilled blood to heal your sinful, low and dead state, accept that YOU are responsible for His tortured body and spilled blood, for YOUR sin, that you are going to have to mournfully grovel at the foot of His cross, in shame over the rat filth you are and in abhorrence of your offenses against Holy God, repenting, realizing you can only be healed by owning the horror of His broken body and spilled blood YOUR sin caused.

There isn’t a more elegant way of saying this, that you have to eat His flesh and drink His blood, which is an offensive statement that alludes to cannibalism, meant to be exactly so. And you know what? Peoples’ egos do find it too offensive to be totally humbled and convicted as a sinner, have too much pride to get knocked off the high horse of their own egos, “I’m no murderer!” (Luke 18:10-13), too deluded in their sinful vanity to grovel at the foot of His cross, repent in humbleness to receive His mercy: too offensive to the vain pride of many, pride the Lord abhors and will not accept, that cross offensive to the prideful like cannibalism is offensive.

A brilliant, rich statement of the Lord, far beyond human intellectual capacity to draw such deep parallels in living words, which, clearly, is beyond the understanding most of you are capable of. All you can do is, like some child, say, “Cannibalism. Yuk!”, void of any understanding the riches of His word. Just be aware what you’re really saying is, “I’m too blind and dense to have a proper understanding of the things of God.”

I realize, like the cross, this true statement won’t be humbling to you, but it really doesn’t commend you to be vain, that you whine and complain over things that, in fact, go way over your head. Arrogant bitching, for your lack of understanding, is not intelligent. It’s called ignorance. Not something to be proud of, you think?

            • Mr. Chet Friend

Sounds like adding and abetting a KNOWN Criminal Act (Cannibalism) to me, under cover of ‘religion’, you christo-FREAK.

          • Gina

We differ on our views of Revelation. You can see my posts on It’s Not The End of The World, Parts I -X at my contributor link above, if you dare. Most people are really upset about it.

        • Pix

Well, that is what Catholicism means, ‘Universal Belief’. It’s based on an amalgamation of long existing pagan beliefs, mostly Mithraism and Dionysus with possibly the 1st century CE living god cult of Titus Flavius, the messiah and saviour of Rome.

          • Pix

Add: The only contemporary historical mention of Jesus was written by the Jewish/Pharisee Josephus Flavius, the Roman Emperors personal historian. It’s about the living god cult of Roman Emperor Titus Flavius, as the the messiah and saviour of Rome. About how Titus saved the Roman empire from the rebelling Roman provinces of Judea and Israel, his account of Jesus follows Titus’s activities as he enters the so claimed ‘holy land’. The rebels last stand was in Jerusalem where he butchered every last man, women, child, sucling baby, their livestock, burned their crops and homes and raised Jerusalem to the ground, exactly as described, in the exact same order or events, leaving not one stone standing upon another.

            • Gina

Pix, you have a problem accepting that the Bible is the word of God, and yet you reply frequently to my posts. That is curious. There is much evidence both from within the scriptures and from secular and archaeological records that you can rely upon God’s word. You can find a great deal of those posted at http://www.apologeticspress.org. If you want to know, you have to do the research. You cannot have faith in someone or something you do not know.

            • Mr. Chet Friend

Gina YOU have a big problem in ‘believing’ that a white-skinned mangod FABLE made the WHOLE UNIVERSE, you insane idiot!

Pix is obsessive and lonely. Gina, what kind of sad, warped personality would call them self a “professor” and spend their days at a website with such low credibility to rehash wikipedia informaiton and to poke fun at those she doesn’t agree with?

She hates the Bible and wants everyone to know it. She even lies about her profession to make her sound credible. Pix has been doing this for so long that I think she finds her only source of solace in aggravating others to no end. And when I say “aggravating” I don’t say it in a sense that she actually ever has a legitimate beef – her opinion is rarely justified.

            • Damien

You realise that Vespasian (and Titus presumably) were in Britain before they became Gods.

              Just like Caesar.

I do wish you would help me understand the Church of DamnEI, Meinad. Are you of the Muslim persuasion?

Let me be the second to call you an enigma, DamnEl, since I am usually able to pinpoint the belief system a person carries. Unknowingly, i’m sure, you always write these enigmatic cryptograms as if there was some kind of esoteric meaning. But the issue with this is that something that is esoteric should be understood by at least a few others. The points you try to make rarely have traction, or a foundation for that matter, and frequently get ignored even if you have a legitimate argument. Let me suggest that you go from A to B before you skip all the way ahead to Z.

Dear Gina, why attack ideas you don’t understand due to your shallowness of thought?

Yes, the Greek word for baptism means “to immerse.” But since Baptismal water is only symbolic, sprinkling or pouring or immersion in water is not really the issue.

The real immersion is not in water, but in the Holy Spirit, Who is able to cleanse the soul from sin.

Water cannot cleanse a soul from Original Sin. Only the Holy Spirit of God can.

So you see, Gina, your position is as shallow as a mud puddle.

what you just took us through is the way Satan’s priests have rationalized the Doctrines of God into pretzels to make them of no effect.

            thank you for the demonstration.

    • Pix

Yes, the churches used to have baptism pools, but people kept catching other peoples disgusting diseases, so they went over to less disease spreading methods of plagiarising pagan ceremonies. Just about all versions of paganism have a rebirth ceremony, the most obvious being the native indigenous Americans with their sweat lodge and then immersion in water to wash the old you away. Baptism is not originate from Judaism, it’s plagiarised from paganism.

Quotes from scripture are from the King James unless otherwise noted:

Mat 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
Mat 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mat 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Mat 3:4 And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
Mat 3:5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
Mat 3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

Mat 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
Mat 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
Mat 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
Mat 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
Mat 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
Mark 1:5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

John 3:23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

Note that John the Baptist did his baptizing in the river Jordan. Ever wonder why? A clue is in the definition of baptism. Here are the Greek words used in connection with baptism, from Strong’s Greek dictionary:

G907. baptizo, bap-tid’-zo; from a der. of G911; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N.T.) of ceremonial ablution, espec. (techn.) of the ordinance of Chr. baptism:–baptist, baptize, wash.

      G908. baptisma, bap’-tis-mah; from G907; baptism (techn. or fig.):–baptism.

G909. baptismos, bap-tis-mos’; from G907; ablution (cerem. or Chr.):–baptism, washing.

      G910. Baptistes, bap-tis-tace’; from G907; a baptizer, as an epithet of Christ’s forerunner:–Baptist.

G911. bapto, bap’-to; a prim. verb; to whelm, i.e. cover wholly with a fluid; in the N.T. only in a qualified or spec. sense, i.e. (lit.) to moisten (a part of one’s person), or (by impl.) to stain (as with dye):–dip.

Apostolic baptism was by full immersion, and that is why John the Baptist used the river Jordan. In other words, the one being baptized was fully dunked under the water, which is clear from the Greek and even acknowledged by the Catholic Church:

So why immersion? What is the reason for it?

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Col 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Baptism is symbolic of burial with Christ, which is the reason for full immersion, and coming up out of the water is symbolic of being raised from the dead to a new and eternal life. This symbolism is not effectively conveyed by sprinkling or pouring.

Another common practice is the baptism of infants soon after birth. Search the New Testament and you will not find a single instance of an infant being baptized.

The “body of Christ” is a reference ONLY to the holy spirit annointed 144,000 firstfruits of mankind, that God is choosing to be co-kings, co-princes, co-heirs, and co-rulers in heaven with Jesus. It does NOT refer to anyone else. Any religion claiming otherwise is flat out lying. Since all religions of man are false and works of the flesh, it should come as no surprise. But, since you all have been lied to your entire lives, you are not likely to believe that what I just posted is exactly what the scriptures teach. It’s in opposition to what religions teach. NO KIDDING. Religions, if they taught what the scriptures really say, would become extinct, since the scriptures say they’re all false and will be totally destroyed in the tribulation, along with ALL of their participants. I don’t expect anyone who is part of any of these religions to believe this, I expect them to research, ACCURATELY, that what I posted is the truth. If you honestly want to discover this truth, you will need to work for it, but it can be found. Religions take a scripture or two and make their point, when it is the entirety of the scriptures that is REQUIRED to discern the truth of a single scripture. No one takes the time to do this, unfortunately for them. Believing wrong teachings will cost you your life, and all religions teach a LOT of wrong teachings, and always have.

as you lascivious “your” religious comments here on BIN I become more and more amazed.

How in the world are you able to twist scriptures into such an illogical, non-biblical mish mash is beyond comprehension.

If this is what the JW’s teach – wow! When they are all resurrected in the 2nd resurrection back to their physical lives (Ezekiel 37 ) it will take years just to remove the confusion so they can then be taught the truth.
