TIMET Owners Elated: Poisoned 10s of 1000s of People With Titanium, No Jail, Just Pay Millions
“Owners of TIMET Jailed For Life For Poisoning Tens of Thousands Of Men, Women, Children” is not the headline read across the nation about TIMET owners today.
Headlines are about owners of TIMET, one of the world’s largest titanium manufacturers “agreeing to pay” a $13.8 million penalty for producing and dumping banned cancer and other killer chemicals at its Henderson factory, “the largest fine ever imposed for a single facility violating the Toxic Substances Control Act.”
TIMET owners did not agree to go to jail for causing tens of thousands, maybe millions of people to have cancer, have brain diseases, other deadly disorders and die prematurely. It seems the jail thing was not even an option.
“We take variability out of your supply chain,” TIMET owners say on their flashy company website, while they put titanium into your water, air, and food chain.
Under the settlement with federal regulators announced Wednesday, Titanium Metals Corporation, or TIMET, also agreed to an extensive investigation and cleanup of potential contamination from the unauthorized manufacture and disposal of PCBs at its 108-acre site on Lake Mead Parkway east of U.S. Highway 95, Henserson, Nevada – phone: (610) 968-1300 in the US and “Rest of World” phone: (636) 887-9060 (according to their website). But good luck at getting anyone to answer a phone.
According to the Department of Justice and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, TIMET’s penalty is the largest ever imposed for violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act at a single facility. According to people TIMET poisoned, no monetary fine would be stiff enough and the corporate criminals should go directly to jail.
The corporation will pay another $250,000 for violations related to illegal disposal of hazardous waste water, so it is unknown at this point exactly how many people have been poisoned by TIMET owners over the past decade, when the contamination was first discovered.
But wait – not to worry. It was discovered ten years ago ”and is already being cleaned up.”
The 64-year-old industrial operation is just north of a Target shopping center and down the street from a hospital.
“It’s been controlled. It’s not a risk to the people or the environment” surrounding the site, said JoAnn Kittrell, spokeswoman for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, that has been monitoring the cleanup since 2007.
And we all know how well we should trust state EPAs.
PCBs were used extensively in hundreds of industrial and commercial applications for 50 years until banned in 1979 due to their being hazardous to health – not due to ”health concerns” as mainstream news likes to put it.
The man-made organic chemicals cause cancer and a range of other health problems. They do not break down naturally, so they linger in the environment and in the human body for a long time where they bioaccumulate, since they are still in the air, water, and food.
The settlement comes on the heels of a far larger cleanup agreement announced early last month for the same swath of industrial land, which helped give Henderson its “healthy start” during World War II. Under that deal, owners of the old Kerr-McGee chemical plant, next to TIMET’s facility, agreed to pay the federal government $1.1 billion to continue cleaning up the nation’s largest plume of perchlorate, a rocket fuel ingredient that interferes with thyroid function in humans.
The Kerr-McGee plume found its way into Lake Mead, the main water source for Las Vegas Valley and much of the Southwest. Kerr-McGee corporate killers are also allowed to roam free.
Officials at TIMET, its parent company, Precision Castparts Corporation, and Kerr-McGee could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
An automated phone message at TIMET in Henderson refers media to the Dallas-based company that sold TIMET several years ago.
Titanium Hazards
Inhaling titanium nano particles is bad for your lungs. Titanium exposure may be harmful to your brain. Titanium nano particles can enter directly into the brain’s hippocampus region through the nose and olfactory bulb. Research conducted by Escuela Superior de Medicina at Instituto Politécnico Nacional found titanium dioxide had a toxic effect on glial cells in the brain, suggesting that exposure to titanium dioxide may cause brain injury and be a health hazard. Long-term chronic exposure and environmental pollution are undocumented and a relationship between nano particle exposure and development of degenerative brain diseases might exist. Although titanium dioxide is permitted as an additive in food and pharmaceutical products, it is classified as “possible carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Why not jail time, my friends? Dang. Low-level crims fill the jails while these corporate killers roam free? What’s wrong with this picture?
Oh, me, what a slam-job on a harmless metal. Where to begin? Well, let’s start by directing you to reading the lower-half of the Wikipedia entry on what Titanium really is. Without it, we would not have a number of consumer goods that we rely on every day. If you also read the ‘medical’ paragraph, you will find that not only is Titanium (as an element) is inert in the human body, but that most of us consume around 0.8 grams of it A DAY in life.
Titanium does NOT cause the body damage, and it does NOT cause cancer. This whole article walks all around the very answer it gave near the beginning of the article. This ‘cancer scare’ is the result of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and other halogens associated to the working of the Titanium. The cutting oils used in machining it, the chemical compounds that it is being blended with to make stealth coatings, the other chemicals that it is being end-stage processed with.
The crime is correct, the company should have provided better PPE (personal protective equipment) to their workers. ABSOLUTELY. Not having the metal or not using it are not viable answers. Titanium is nearly as strong as steel for almost half the weight. It is the lightweight strongman that makes salt water and radiation a ‘no problem’ for heavy industry. Titanium can be used in reconstructing worn-out human body joints, submarines, mach 1+ fighter jets, and so much more. It has numerous coatings which it can make that few other things can. Were it not for Titanium Dioxide, you wouldn’t have white paint (not without lead, anyhow). Without Titanium Nitride, anything you buy made of metal (even steel) would cost more – because it is the coating that industry uses on drill and milling bits to make them last longer. Without titanium, your laptop would weigh twice as much.
If you don’t understand the science, don’t villianize it until you actually know what you are talking about. One knee-jerk response to emotional tree-huggers who don’t understand the science is about like you screaming ‘ugg, ugg, fire, dangerous for you, bad, bad’. Sure, fire is bad and can hurt you – but if properly contained and used as an intelligent tool, it does no harm and is one of the most versatile forces we have available to us.
Get out of the tree, walk on two feet, and realize that any tool can be used by fools, or by wise people, and that the difference isn’t the tool’s fault, but the person’s fault.
These guys should have paid a much higher price if they put their employees at risk. They didn’t because they are a defense contractor who can process one of the hardest-to-process metals there is. No one is stepping up to take their place, so that’s why they didn’t want to bankrupt them to punish them. Right, wrong or indifferent, that’s just how life works.
Otherwise, all murderers would be executed, along with pedophiles and rapists. That not being the case, one can only deduce – LIFE IS NOT FAIR.
Get over it, and realize who the enemy actually is. It’s not this metal that is beneficial to us.
