Applications2U, Pittsburgh-Based Cloud Hosting Provider, Turns 10

One of the fastest growing cloud hosting providers in the Pittsburgh region, Applications2U, celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year. Applications2U’s servers operate 99.99% uptime every year and they maintain a 30% year-to-year revenue growth rate.

“I remember starting Applications2U on a cold winter day in 2003 on Liberty Avenue. No one was using the term ‘cloud computing’ but we knew companies needed a better way to keep their data secure while receiving support and a high level of availability to manage computer files and applications,” Dan Dillman, Applications2U President and CEO, said. “We offer the same personalized service and cloud technology as we did 10 years ago.”

Since 2003, Applications2U’s servers operate 99.99% of the time, putting them in the exclusive industry category called the “four 9’s” of uptime. Most recently, in January 2013, A2U initiated a consulting component that concentrates on assisting businesses to deploy an internal cloud model that resembles that of which Applications2U has been maintaining inside their own datacenters. “Another value Applications2U has brought to companies is in being able to web enable applications for software developers,” Dillman said.

After buying-out two other partners, Dillman and Jason Hawks, his current business partner, along with two employees maintained Applications2U until adding six new hires over the last 12 months. This spurred significant growth with on target revenue already showing over 50% increases for 2013.

Dillman said the employee morale is high. “We try to maintain a family atmosphere, we joke around with each other but we are all hard workers knowing that our client’s needs come first,” he said.

Dillman, a McKeesport native, said Pittsburgh is the perfect environment for start-up businesses.  He started Applications2U utilizing a shared data center on Liberty Avenue with SunGard International. It turned out to be a great partnership because SunGard provided the secured rack space for Applications2U to host their servers. Dillman benefitted from the Pittsburgh Chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives and attended various small business workshops offered throughout the region. “The camaraderie, support and collaboration that exists in the Pittsburgh start-up community is like nowhere else in the world,” Dillman said.
