Sericipterus – not a mandible: a tibia/fibula
Rarely this happens.
But when it does, it screws things up a bit.
Earlier
I followed Andres et al. (2010) when they identified a long bone in Sericipterus as a mandible with surangular. Turns out no other sisters have such a gracile mandible devoid of tooth sockets.
Turns out the bone is a tibia + fibula, sometimes known as a crus.
Figure 1. Click to enlarge. From Andres et al. 2010, where they misidentify a tibia/fibula and call it a mandible with surangular.
Removing the mandible and adding a tibia/fibula makes better sense here, too.
If you think Sericipterus looks like any other Dorygnathus, you’re right. Because it nests within Dorygnathus in the large pterosaur tree, wherever you put the tibia.
