LED Screen Rolls Up Like Paper

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A new LED screen can roll up like a sheet of paper. This technology could soon change the nature of media, and home living.

The flexible display has been introduced by electronics giant LG. This first model features an 18-inch screen that rolls up into a cylinder just over one inch in diameter. Similar designs could soon be used to build flexible televisions up to 60 inches across, the company reports.

In-Byung Kang, vice-president of LG, stated, “We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches… thereby leading the future display market.”

Newspapers might forever be changed by the invention. Combined with a microprocessor, pictures in newspapers made from paper could move, like a scene from Harry Potter.

The LG G Flex offers a resolution of 1200 by 810 pixels, on par with many computer monitors. The display is only about as thick as a thin sheet of laminate plastic. The display even continues to display video as it is being rolled up for transport.

Organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDS, were used in the construction of the revolutionary design.

The company also released a second 18-inch display. This one is nearly-transparent, allowing the installation of television screens on walls that are almost invisible when shut off. Any flat surface can now show video, then return to its normal color.

We could soon see monitors and TV screens everywhere. Museums can now create displays that morph from a physical display to video presentation and back again.

The technology could also become overused in the future. Traditional monuments could be updated with the new monitors. The Lincoln Memorial could be made ablaze with video of the Civil War. At home, the screens could find their way on to walls throughout the house. Combined with Web cameras, each room could be a window to every other room in the home.
