A Problematic Rock on Mars

The cm-sized dark rock at the center is problematic because it may be an artificial rock. First of all, no geologists think it is a sedimentary rock as it contains many holes. Some people think it is an igneous rock because it is dark in color and contains many holes. The question is: how did an igneous rock get here? It is unlikely to have come from a volcano, as the nearest volcano is hundreds of miles away. It is unlikely to have come from a meteor impact event, as it is outside the ejecta blanket of the nearest meteor impact crater (note 1). Martian wind cannot have transported it from far away. A clue lies in the larger rock it sits on. NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity crushed the lower edge of the larger rock, thus exposing the complex structure in the interior of an artificial rock, which is evident in mars.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/?rawid=1639MH00019000106…

So, the rocks are likely artificial rocks.

Added on March 20: The Problem with Rocks in Gale Crater
By definition, sedimentary rocks do not contain minerals that are characteristic of igneous rocks (note 1). However, numerous “sedimentary rocks” in Gale Crater possess basaltic minerals (note 1). No one says the layered rocks in Gale Crater are igneous rocks or metamorphic rocks.
