Firefox Quantum Is Blazingly Fast (Plus Our Top 5 Security Extensions)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

When it comes to internet browsers, I’ve used them all–Chrome, Safari, Edge, Opera, Firefox, you name it. While each of these browsers has their strengths and weaknesses, over the years I find myself just using Chrome and Firefox and, between both, Chrome comes out as the clear winner.

Of course, this was before I updated to the latest version of Mozilla’s new browser: Firefox Quantum. Is it better than previous versions of the world’s 2nd most popular browser? In a word, yes. However, no browser is entirely perfect, although Quantum comes very close. Especially when you consider the available security extensions. Here, we’ll take a quick look at how much faster it is and our top 5 Firefox Quantum security extensions.

Firefox Quantum

Quantum version 57 (the latest iteration of the open-source browser) is twice as fast as previous versions (52 and below) and offers a slimmed-down, modern appearance over its predecessors. According to Mozilla, it also uses 30% less memory over Chrome, which can zap the resources on even the toughest of systems. For instance, my PC boasts a meager 16Gb and Chrome wrangles 80% of that quite quickly with the number of open tabs I use. Alternatively, Quantum takes advantage of the multi-core processing power of most modern devices, giving the browser more speed, especially when switching through multiple tabs–something other browsers haven’t taken full advantage of yet. Here’s a quick comparison

As far as security goes, Quantum supports extensions created using the WebExtension API–a cross-browser system for developing extensions, ceasing support for legacy extensions. For example, some extensions quit working with each new release of Firefox, as developers need time to upgrade them for compatibility. The new framework allows developers to build extensions that won’t break with every Quantum release. Quantum rounds-out their security features with tightened sandbox security for Linux as well as Tracking Protection, efficiently blocking content loaded from domains that track users across multiple sites.

Those who want additional privacy options should take a look at these five extensions, which help keep valuable information from prying eyes:

  1. Privacy Badger: Blocks spying adds and invisible trackers.
  2. HTTPS Everywhere: Encrypts communications on many major websites.
  3. uBlock Origin: Blocks annoying content with simple user control.
  4. Decentraleyes: Protects against tracking through free, centralized, content delivery.
  5. Cookie AutoDelete: Any cookies not being used when a tab closes are auto-deleted.

These are just a few of the available privacy add-ons we recommend but there are other notables offering increased functionality as well. Among others extensions, we recommend evaluating Clear Cache (clears your cache with a click of a button), Grammarly (helps with writing content), and Evernote (clip web content you would like to save). Like Chrome, there are an endless supply of extensions to customize Quantum, which only adds to its appeal.

In fact, Mozilla attributes Quantum’s appeal on the number of people who have downloaded their new browser since its release a few weeks ago. 170-million users around the globe have downloaded Quantum, and Mozilla finds that highly encouraging, stating it’s “their biggest release to date.” That said, Google’s Chrome still commands 58.8% of the market share while Firefox nets just 13.4% but those numbers are expected to fluctuate over the next year. Will Quantum give Mozilla the boost it needs to retake the browser crown? Only time will tell, but if you’re like me, you’ll find that the latest release of Firefox is the best version you’ve used in a long time.

No longer set as default browser on my machine. Solicitation through addons went up, popups are not blocked and some of those are as bad as malware. A game add took over Firefox and I switched to Comodo, nearly the same browser. I do not know if tracking is a problem, did not use it long enough to figure that one out. Speed is not everything.
