The 2018 Earth Science Week photography competition
Earth Science Week 2018 is just three months away, which means it’s time to launch our annual photography competition!
Previous years have seen a host of stunning entries, and we’re hoping for more of your amazing geological images this year, as part of our celebrations of the geology of the UK & Ireland.
The twelve winning images will be displayed at the Geological Society’s HQ in Burlington House throughout Earth Science Week – and as often as we can during the ensuing year – as well as featuring in our popular Earth Science Week calendar.
Previous winners have also featured prominently in the media, including in The Guardian, The BBC and the Daily Mail, to name a few!
Earth Science in our Lives
This year’s Earth Science Week theme is ‘Earth Science in our Lives’, highlighting the ways in which geology features in our everyday lives – whether through objects, products and services or locations.
For this year’s photo competition, we’re interested in images which reflect geology that’s been important in your life. It might be a place you often visit, somewhere you’ve carried out fieldwork, or simply somewhere close to where you live. As ever, our theme can be interpreted as broadly as you wish – your image might also be inspired by how human activity and geology interact (as in the image above!), or the ways in which geology features in our lives through resources, outdoor activities or as inspiration for artists, writers and scientists alike.
Whatever it is, please send in your entries with just a line or two explaining what the subject of the image means to you.

Prizes
As well as being displayed at the Geological Society, winning photographs will all feature in our 2019 calendar, with full credit. In addition, first, second and third prizes will be awarded:
1st prize: £100
2nd prize: £50
3rd prize: £25
All 12 winners will also receive a collection of geological goodies, including our much coveted rock hammer usb sticks, a copy of the calendar, and a year’s free subscription to Geoscientist magazine.
The rules
The competition is free to enter, and open to all. You may submit as many photographs as you like, and images must feature geology from the UK or Ireland.
Photographs must be submitted electronically, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, ideally landscape format, and large enough to be featured in a print calendar (minimum dimensions: 216mm x 154 mm).
Please include with your entry:
- The title of the photograph
- The location of the photograph
- A short explanation of what the subject of the image means to you
Entries must be emailed to [email protected] by midnight on the closing date, Tuesday 25th September.
