Glitch Puts October Update to Windows 10 on Hold

As every user of the Windows 10 operating system knows, Microsoft sends out updates to the system on a monthly basis. Most individuals just wait for the automatic push of the monthly updates, but some users actively seek them the moment the operating system updates become available and manually install it themselves. Turns out that action was good for the rest of us, especially this month.

Seems the October update to Windows 10 contained a glitch, and once installed, resulted in the unintended wiping out of users’s data: documents, music, pictures and other data. To make things even worse, impacted users have not been able to recover the deleted files.

On 6 October 2018, Microsoft paused the widespread automatic release of the October update to Windows 10 scheduled for today, 9 October 2018, and removed the update option from their site for users to manually install.   

“We have paused the rollout of the update while we continue to investigate reports from some customers,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Business Insider.

In a blog post, Microsoft said the affected population was low — “one one-hundredth of one percent” of people who installed the update experienced data loss, the company claims. The issue should be fixed now, but Microsoft has released a fixed version of the update first to the Windows Insider community of volunteer software testers, before it goes back out to regular consumers for download. 

“We have fully investigated all reports of data loss, identified and fixed all known issues in the update, and conducted internal validation,” Microsoft said in the blog post. “Also, Microsoft Support and our retail stores customer service personnel are available at no charge to help customers.”

Microsoft has not provided a new date for when the widespread release of the October update to Windows 10 will occur.
