FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi gifted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee a signed Barcelona club jersey with a message “Best wishes for my friend Didi from Lionel Messi.” On the back Didi and No. 10 is written.
Earlier, Messi gifted the same to Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor on his birthday sporting initials of his name RK on the back.
Last year West Bengal successfully hosted Under-17 World Cup and this was the first ever FIFA event hosted in India. The state is well known for football craze.
FC Barcelona team arrived in Kolkata to play a friendly match with Mohun Bagan. Following it Barcelona legends Juliano Belletti and Jari Litmanen presented the jersey to the Football Next Foundation organizers as it was not possible then to directly handover the give to Mamata Banerjee.
Football foundation founder Kaushik Moulik said, “They couldn’t hand it over to Ms Banerjee personally, so they gave it to us. We have approached the CMO. Whenever Ms Banerjee agrees to meet us, we will hand it over to her.”
Messi had played a friendly game for Argentina against Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium in 2011. European footballers playing in the state is rare.
Meanwhile, in on-field developments, Barcelona holds top spot in Spanish League La Liga. It is followed by Real Madrid, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.
