General Ideas about Ooids

Ooids (see [link to www.google.com.tw (secure)] ) are sand-like particles, often smaller than 1 mm across. They are often spherical or oval. Ooids’ colors are various. Each ooid contains a nucleus and concentric layers of 1 to 3 micrometers in thickness. Individual concentric layers are invisible unless they are magnified to very high magnification. Bacteria may destroy the concentric layers.

Geologists speculate that ooids are sand grains produced in geological processes. However, many experts and I think ooids are formed by life (see Note 1 ref. 3 to 15). So, ancient and modern ooids are products of life. Life needs water to exist.

Ooids contain bacteria, because bacteria constructed the ooids. Ooids also contain other organic matter, which may be food for bacteria living in the ooids.
On Earth, there are billions of tons of modern and ancient ooids. Through geological processes, modern ooids become ancient ooids embedded in oolite. On Mars, there are ancient ooids (note 1) and modern ooids (note 2). To repeat, Martian ooids were formed by Martian photosynthetic bacteria, such as cyanobacteria.
