Arvind Kejriwal guv to LG: Reject mercy plea of Nirbhaya convict

Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain has strongly recommended on behalf of Arvind Kejriwal government rejection of mercy petition of the 2012 Nirbhaya rape and murder case convict.

One of the convicts, Vinay Sharma, filed a mercy plea before President Ram Nath Kovind. He and five others had gangraped and murdered a 23-year-old paramedic student on the night of December 16 and 17, 2012 inside a running bus in south Delhi.

Nirbhaya was severely assaulted and thrown out on the road. Following initial treatment in Delhi amid much protest across India, she was airlifted for further treatment to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore where she died on December 29.

Jain has sent a file to Lt Governor Anil Baijal reading, “This is the most heinous crime of extreme brutality committed by the applicant. This is the case where exemplary punishment should be given to deter others from committing such atrocious crimes.”

The minister said there is no merit in mercy petition and it is learned the file would be sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs accompanied with recommendations of the state LG.

One of the accused hanged himself in the prison while another being a juvenile was convicted and given imprisonment of three years in a reform facility. The fourth convict has not filed a plea.

Vinay Sharma currently is in Tihar jail. A final call on his mercy plea will be taking by the President.
