Mars Sand Contains Carbonate and Complex Organics.

NASA discovered many complex organic molecules in Mars sand grains at Gobabeb and Ogunquit Beach in 2016 and 2017. But up to this date NASA has not published the discovery.(See reply 2 and reply 6 in Thread: Why Did NASA Do Only Two Wet Chemistry Experiments on Mars? ). NASA said scientists are not ready for the discovery.

“Dust appeared to contain simple organic carbon molecules, perhaps due to atmospheric and surface processes acting to break down more complex organic molecules in rocks. Sand appeared to contain more inorganic carbon in the form of carbonate, even though the rocks nearby do not contain carbonate. Because sand can only travel a limited distance, this suggests that carbonate is present in rocks somewhere in Gale crater that we have not explored yet.” (see Plain Language Summary)

“The SAM-derived carbon content differs between Rocknest and Gobabeb/Ogunquit Beach, with more than half of the evolved CO2 in Rocknest attributed to organics and most evolved CO2 in Gobabeb and Ogunquit Beach attributed to carbonates, further suggesting that organics are concentrated in the fine size fraction (Ehlmann et al., 2017; Stern et al., 2018; Sutter et al., 2017).”
