A closer look at the wrist and wingtip of the ROM Rhamphorhynchus

Curious about the wrist and wing tip
of ROM 55352 specimen of Rhamphorhynchus (Fig 1), I asked a friend to shoot some closeups of these areas (Figs 2–5) during the recent SVP convention at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada. Thank you, Tom!

Figure 1. The ROM 55352 specimen of Rhamphorhynchus in situ. Note the good, not excellent, preservation of soft tissue wing membranes and tail vane.

The free fingers of the ROM specimen
were flipped dorsally during taphonomy. Here (Fig 2) the fingers, radiale and pteroid are returned to their natural position using Photoshop (Fig 1). Metacarpal one is either buried or lost. The other four metacarpals are present.

Figure 2. Right hand of the ROM 55352 specimen of Rhamphorhynchus, returned to their in vivo positions here after taphonomic disturbance.

A closeup of the dorsal surface of metacarpal 4
reveals the tiny, vestige of digit 5 here isolated in white and compared to the manus of the Middle Triassic pterosaur precursor,
Cosesaurus, not to scale.

Figure 3. ROM 55352 specimen of Rhamphorhynchus focusing on metacarpal 4 and vestigial, finger 5. Metacarpal 5 is broken, revealing its hollow nature, and partially buried in the matrix.

A closeup of the wing tip
of the ROM 55352 specimen (Figs 4, 5) shows a typical pulley shape (Fig 6) at the distal tip of phalanx 4 followed by sharp ungual, phalanx 5.

This is not the first time
finger 5 and the wingtip ungual have been identified in pterosaurs. See below for other examples and evidence.
University textbooks and pterosaur experts report these structures do not exist, ignoring the evidence and omitting valid pterosaur precursors from analyses.
