SVP abstracts – 13: on lagerpetids

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Pezzoni, Nesbitt and Stocker 2022 reported,
“As the most ecologically diverse and speciose bird-line archosaurs, dinosaurs and pterosaurs are the subject of intense study and interest.

This is embarrassing to paleontology. As Peters 2000 and Peters 2007 reported and the large reptile tree (LRT, 2171 taxa) continues to document, pterosaurs are not related to dinosaurs or archosaurs, but nest within Lepidosauria, closer to Huehuecuetzpalli than to Herrerasaurus. Look at the fingers. Look at the toes. Look at the sternal complex and leathery eggs. The simple hinge ankle joint and antorbital fenestra are convergent traits. Adding taxa reveals this.

“However, understanding their origin and early evolution is complicated by the relative paucity of skeletons of early-diverging ornithodiran fossils.

Ornithodira is a junior synonym for Reptilia (= Amniota). Adding taxa reveals this.

“Lagerpetids were a clade of early-diverging ornithodirans sharing morphological traits with both dinosaur precursors and pterosaurs.

No. Lagerpetids (Fig 1) are proterochampsids, most closely related to Tropidosuchus (Fig 1) in the LRT. Adding taxa reveals this.

Pezzoni, Nesbitt and Stocker 2022 reported,
“Many aspects of lagerpetid anatomy are still unknown, including the extent of morphological variation in the axial skeleton.

True. This reveals how far invested workers will go to promote the myths that bring in grant money seeking the origin of pterosaurs and dinosaurs. Adding taxa reveals all this.

“Here we describe eleven vertebrae collected from the Dockum Group of Texas in association with a braincase referred to the lagerpetid Dromomeron gregorii.

…otherwise known from a hind limb.

“The amphicoelous vertebrae have undivided or subdivided transverse processes set on the neural arch, indicating that they likely belong to the trunk series.

Missing fact: pterosaurs and their kin have procoelus vertebrae.

“The centra are longer than tall, and well-preserved neural arches show prominent centrodiapophyseal and postzygapophyseal centrodiapophyseal fossae. Vertebrae estimated to be more posterior in the trunk series are proportionally wider and more robust, with transverse processes in an anteroventral position on the neural arch. All centra lack a rimmed lateral foramen, in contrast to those of pterosaurs.

Repeat: “in contrast to those of pterosaurs”.

“There is no evidence for slender, anteriorly-inclined neural spines as seen in the close relative Lagerpeton. (See Fig 1).

Hmmm. Another confession.

“The ventral surfaces of the postzygapophyses are joined by a horizontal plate of variable depth, which connects to a notch between the small and widely-spaced prezygapophyses.”

Are these authors “Pulling a Larry Martin?” Indeed they are! Where is the wide gamut analysis to rescue this abstract disaster? Its not here.

You might remember that co-author Sterling Nesbitt entered the profession of paleontology in 2011 with a massively mis-scored phylogenetic analysis pulled apart and repaired in a nine-piece series ending here.

“The trunk vertebrae of Dromomeron possess apparently plesiomorphic character states more similar to dinosauromorphs than in early branching pterosauromorphs.

More similar, perhaps because they nest closer together in the LRT.

“The presence of distinct neural arch fossae in Dromomeron is a condition shared with aphanosaurs, silesaurids, and saurischians, but absent in the dinosauriform Lagosuchus, ornithischians, and the closely related lagerpetid Ixalerpeton.

Another blunder. Ixalerpeton nests within the Protorosauria when more taxa are added.

“The centra proportions show a similar pattern of distribution among ornithodirans. The morphology documented for Dromomeron emphasizes the wide variation in vertebral structure among early bird-line archosaurs, even among closely related taxa within Lagerpetidae.”

The only bird-line archosaurs are dinosaurs. The only other archosaurs are crocodylomorphs. Adding taxa reveals this. So simple to do, but no one wants to do this.

All three authors are from Virginia Tech.
Lead author Neil Pezzoni is the youngest of the three and an undergraduate getting an education in the mythology and tradition of paleontology. I feel sorry for him. Like all undergrads he is paying tuition to his professors. Ironically his dollars put them in charge of giving him good grades and plum assignments as he competes to become their favorite.

Steer clear
of the Virginia Tech Paleobiology & Geobiology Research Group until this pterosaur/ lagerpetid problem gets resolved over there.

Build your own LRT.
You can do it for free and on your own time without having to depend on the charity and good will of those you support with your tuition dollars. Professors, their postdocs and their predecessors also went through this professional fraternity ritual. You don’t have to. You, too, can be self taught.

Remember:
It was paleontologists who kept Archaeopteryx separated from theropod dinosaurs for over a century. More recently it was paleontologists who kept deinonychosaurs separated from birds for 30 years following Ostrom’s work in the late 1960s. Ostrom was distraught about that. And extant paleontologists still support the bat-wing birds and bat-wing pterosaurs, successfully ignoring the evidence and spreading these myths.

Currently
novel and validated hypotheses on ichthyosaur, mesosaur, archosaur, dinosaur, bat, turtle, snake, odontocete, mysticete, mammal, repitle, human and pterosaur origins have been ignored by paleontologists who are focused on keeping their professional fraternity going for a few more decades.
