Square Sun Seen In Sunset

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Astronomers in the Netherlands have discovered a world where the sun is square. It is Earth. On June 6th Jan Koeman was watching the sunset from Lauwersoog, and this is what he saw

“The sunset was a very weird one,” says Koeman. “Inversions in the atmosphere gave it some very odd shapes.”
UK atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley was in the Netherlands last week. “Conditions were favorable for this kind of mirage,” he says. “To see weird miraged suns look out at sunrise in very cold weather and at sunset when it is hot. We had beautiful hot sunny weather all last week in the Netherlands. The sun heated the land and topmost layers of the sea to generate by early evening strong temperature inversions, layers of unusually warm air beneath cooler air. The setting sun rays slanted through the layers where they were bent to form multiple image slices that combine into outlandish shapes and even stacked pancakes. Sometimes tiny green flashes can be photographed on the topmost pancake.”

“I was looking for the green flash,” adds Koeman, “but this time no success. More sunsets will follow.”

      Seriously?…..
The sun is NOT square. What your lookin at is an optical illusion.

      • Breadalban

that’s why he calls it a mirage you fool.

        • Millennium

so what your saying is, is that my sarcasm needs some work?……righton.
          LMAO….thanks for calling me names.

    • Mr A Hole - PHD, BSE, HN51, ADHD hons. DVT HIV

Whaaaaat ? The suns not square?! That’s an optical illusion? I refute your claims. Next you’ll be telling me that the earth not flat and hurtling through space on the back of a giant turtle. Some people ……

    • Omerta

Well duh, it’s always been square.

    • RMS

You see people, that’s the problem now-a-days, no one can tell the difference between an illusion and reality.
No one “discriminates”, no one “thinks”, and no one “questions”.
Until everyone can do this, they’ll be suckered into believing everything.

    • CosmicKiwiPerth

Course it`s an illusion. I saw a really neat one off the coast of New Zealand`s east coast one sunrise when on holidays when I was a teenager. It looked like 2 saucers inverted with the curved part facing up & downwards with each saucer. The sun does that from time to time in sunrise & sunset. Dunno how 2 unenlightened people recommended this…

      • PlowingUrMom

better watch out, some people may believe this is nibiru/planet x, like some of the morons we all know from here at BIN.
        won’t say any names….lol.

Man, “discovered a world where the sun is square” isn’t meant to be taken literally, kids. The entire article explains how it’s an illusion due to atmospheric effects. Nice story.

“Before its News” implies that the stories should at least be marginally newsworthy. This is not.

        • Geeper

I have no problem with a “meteorologists take a cool photo” in my news feed, this was a new one on me.

    • Mirabolin

I think that at this point – the sun on the horizon – the sun is actually already below the horizon. It is only an optical illusion or mirage effect that makes it seem to be on the horizon.

      • Geeper

Yep, it’s pretty much below the horizon as soon as it appears to start touching it.

    • ljcarolyne

HEY, my husband took a picture of Heart Shaped Moon in February this year, for real.
This is in Port St. Lucie FL, beautiful for situation. Anyone know of good picture contests?

    • Anonymous

i think people need to go back to school if they think that is a square..

    • InLikeFlint

Most probably this effect is due to the diaphragm of the camera taking the pic. Cheap lenses have f/stop diaphragms that do not have many blades, so pointing it at the setting sun means the the lens closes its diaphragm to the maximum and with only a few blades it will have a squarish aperture opening.

      • Anonymous

no idiot…spare us your faux expertise and take elementary reading comprehension again..

the camera was pointed towards the sun to take a picture of what was already being seen as what looked like a mis shapen sun..

” On June 6th Jan Koeman was watching the sunset from Lauwersoog, and this is what he saw
“The sunset was a very weird one,” says Koeman.”

        • InLikeFlint

Yeah, right. I bet he was looking at it through the camera when he saw this. This magnified view shows classic squared aperture effects and I bet money it just exaggerated a mirage effect that usually happens when seeing the sun at the horizon.

    • Blackie the faithful border collie

The sun is neither square nor cool, cats

    • CWHJr

Comon guys! It is obveously not square, it is a hexigon. Besides, don’t you see the boat. Everyone is so involved with the article that they miss the evidence.
The guy in the boat cut out parts of the sun so it appears like a hexegon. The camera man in on the hoax was to quick taking the picture and the perritator was caught on camera.

Lucky for us the sun is self generating so it was able to heal itself before the next sunrise. This could have changed everything. Doesn’t the Vatican have a law against defacing the sun god?

      Geesh, some people…

    • truthzilla

It also gets dimmer when I put on my sun glasses… I will post a video soon…:)
