Wikipedia Is Wrong about Ooid Formation.

An article entitled “The formation of ooids”, published in 1978, claims inorganic solutions do not produce ooids (note 1). Today, almost 40 years later, a Wikipedia article still wrongly claims ooids are formed geologically (note 2). Scientific evidences for microbial formation of ooids are listed in notes 3 and 4 below.

Note 1: “Successful laboratory formation of quiet water ooids was accomplished in supersaturated seawater solutions containing humic acids. Negative results were obtained from strictly inorganic solutions, and from those containing simple amino acids, single proteins, mixtures of proteins or mucopolysaccharides, soil and sediment extracts.” Quoted from the second paragraph in
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-3091.1978.tb00326.x/abstract
Note 2: “Wave action in the lake washed sediments back and forth in the shallows on the southwestern shore, forming ooids and depositing them on steeper benches near the shore in 2- to 40-feet thicknesses.” Quoted from the third paragraph of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oolite#Occurrence

“The mechanism of formation starts with a small fragment of sediment acting as a ‘seed’, e.g. a piece of a shell. Strong intertidal currents wash the ‘seeds’ around on the seabed, where they accumulate layers of chemically precipitated calcite from the supersaturated water.” Quoted from the second paragraph in

Note 3: “For a long time ooids were regarded as chiefly ‘inorganic’ grains, but strong biological controls on the formation of ooids are evident (Fig. 4. 24).” Quoted from line 6, Section 4.2.5 , page 142 in https://books.google.com.tw/books?id=dNvnxWJnxtgC&pg=PA143&lpg=PA143&dq=ooids+fecal&source=bl&ots=aY0HD6KFre&sig=VtVXdgGK7gh89LldjlFI7Dkjjc4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=YNqoU4hozpPIBLregqAJ&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=ooids%20fecal&f=true
Note 4: Scientific evidences for microbial formation of ooids are listed in Ref. 4 to Ref. 15 in http://wretchfossil.blogspot.tw/p/putative-martian-microbes-formed.html
