traitor

  (trā′tər)n.

One who betrays one’s country, a cause, or a trust, especially one who commits treason.

Treason

 (redirected from traitor)
Also found in: DictionaryThesaurusLegalEncyclopedia.

For other uses, see Treason (disambiguation) or Traitor (disambiguation).

A 17th century illustration of Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate James I of England. He failed and was convicted of treasonand sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.

In lawtreason is the crime that covers some of the more extreme actsagainst one’s nation or sovereign.[1] Historically, treason also covered themurder of specific social superiors, such as the murder of a husband by hiswife or that of a master by his servant. Treason against the king was knownas high treason and treason against a lesser superior was petty treason.A person who commits treason is known in law as a traitorOran’sDictionary of the Law (1983) defines treason as a ”citizen‘s actions to helpa foreign government overthrow, make war against, or seriously injure the[parent nation]“. In many nations, it is also often considered treason toattempt or conspire to overthrow the government, even if no foreign countryis aiding or involved by such an endeavor.

At times, the term ”traitor” has been used as a political epithet, regardlessof any verifiable treasonable action. In a civil war or insurrection, thewinners may deem the losers to be traitors. Likewise the term ”traitor” isused in heated political discussion – typically as a slur against political dissidents, or against officials in power who are perceived as failing to actin the best interest of their constituents. In certain cases, as with theDolchstoßlegende (Stab-in-the-back myth), the accusation of treasontowards a large group of people can be a unifying political message.Treason is considered to be different and on many occasions a separatecharge from ”treasonable felony” in many parts of the world.

History

Cartoon depicting Václav Bělský (1818–1878), Mayor of Prague from 1863 until1867, in charge of the city during Prussianoccupation in July 1866. Some forceswanted to try him for high treason (left:”What some men wished” – ”Dr. Bělský forhigh treason”), but he got a full confidencefrom the Council of Prague (right: ”but whatthey did not expect” – ”address ofconfidence from the city of Prague”).

In English lawhigh treason was punishable by being hanged, drawn and quartered (men) or burnt at the stake (women), although beheading couldbe substituted by royal command (usually for royalty and nobility). Thosepenalties were abolished in 1814, 1790 and 1973 respectively. The penaltywas used by later monarchs against people who could reasonably be calledtraitors, although most modern jurists would call it excessive. Many of themwould now just be considered dissidents.

In William Shakespeare‘s play King Lear (c. 1600), when the King learns thathis daughter Regan has publicly dishonoured him, he says ”They could not,would not do ’t; ’tis worse than murder”: a conventional attitude at that time. InDante Alighieri‘s Inferno, the ninth and lowest circle of Hell is reserved fortraitors; Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus, suffers the worst torments of all:being constantly gnawed at by one of Lucifer’s own three mouths. Histreachery is considered so notorious that his name has long been synonymouswith traitor, a fate he shares with Benedict ArnoldVidkun QuislingMarcus Junius Brutus (who too is depicted in Dante’s Inferno, suffering the same fateas Judas along with Cassius Longinus). Indeed, the etymology of the wordtraitor originates with Judas’ handing over of Jesus to the chief priests,captains of the temple and elders (Luke 22:52): the word is derived from theLatin traditor which means ”one who delivers.”[2] Christian theology andpolitical thinking until after the Enlightenment considered treason andblasphemy as synonymous, as it challenged both the state and the will ofGod. Kings were considered chosen by God,[3] and to betray one’s countrywas to do the work of Satan.

Many nations’ laws mention various types of treason. ”Crimes Related to Insurrection” is the internal treason, and may includea coup d’etat. ”Crimes Related to Foreign Aggression” is the treason of cooperating with foreign aggression positivelyregardless of the national inside and outside. ”Crimes Related to inducement of Foreign Aggression” is the crime ofcommunicating with aliens secretly to cause foreign aggression or menace. Depending on a country, conspiracy is added tothese. In Japan, the application of ”Crimes Related to Insurrection” was considered about Aum Shinrikyo cult which caused religious terrorism.

Just a couple of hundred ringleaders is interfering with MAGA. They need to be arrested and then HANGED because they are and can doing great harm to this country called these United States of America.

We should not fool around but exercise the full weight of American law on them. They do not wish US well and have placed themselves in politically powerfool positions to betray this country.

This, after having benefitted from our wealth, trust and generosity. I have no feelings toward them and I believe the feeling is mutual. But I’m not the one betraying this country and handing you over to your enemies who will lob missiles towards you and set all your great cities on fire and INVADE your country.

The screams will not be muffled. On earth, everyone will hear you SCREAM!
