Magical Herbs: Pot Marigolds in a Healing Garden

I sat for a while in the Horniman Museum‘s Medicinal Garden to enjoy the beautiful array of flowers before my visit to the butterfly house earlier this week. These sunny marigolds were in full bloom and looked lovely, so I photographed them.

According to the sign beside the flowers: “Pot marigolds are a popular remedy for skin problems. An oil from this plant has an anti-inflammatory effect when used on bites, stings, burns and dermatitis.”

I could probably do with some, as those are all things I’ve been suffering from this summer.

Magically, marigolds are more associated with psychic powers than with healing. Rachel Patterson, in her book A Kitchen Witch’s World of Magical Herbs, says: “Marigold is my plant of choice whenever I am putting together any spells or incense blends for psychic powers.”

She adds that they also have magical properties for dreams, protection, luck and happiness. One suggestion is: “Put marigold flowers under your bed to ensure a good sleep and keep away nightmares and invite in prophetic dreams.”

Having a vase of marigolds in your home will also help attract good luck and can lift the spirits of all who dwell there.
