The Rapture: What’s to Fear? Part 1, 2, 3

As his wife and those closest to him gathered around his bedside one evening, they believed this would be the last time they would see him in this life. Louis Talbot, the longtime president of Biola University and driving force behind the formation of Talbot Theological Seminary, was in the hospital suffering from pneumonia. Many in the room, including Carol his wife, believed he would not survive the night.
Seeing the tears stream down the face of his wife, Talbot responded with these words, “What’s the matter with you? For this I was born. For this I’ve lived all my life—to see my Saviour face to face. It will be all glory. I can hardly wait.”[i] Louis Talbot so longed to see Jesus that the thought of dying filled him with joy rather than fear because death meant he would soon be with his Savior.
Louis Talbot did not die that night, although for a moment the next morning he thought he had died and was in heaven. “Looking around at the bleak hospital room, he said, ‘If this is heaven, I certainly misled a lot of people while I was down on earth!’”[ii]
While we smile at Talbot’s sense of humor, we also realize that as followers of Jesus our ultimate hope is the same as his; it’s the expectation of seeing our Savior “face to face.” This can happen either through our death or the rapture, which is when Jesus appears to take His followers back to His Father’s house as He promised in John 14:2-3.
Jesus intended his words in John 14 to calm the troubled hearts of his disciples who felt great sadness at His word regarding His departure. The Lord eased their fears regarding His departure by assuring them that not only would He return for them, but he would prepare a place for them during His time away from them.
Despite Jesus’ assurances regarding His future appearing, many dread the thought of such a sudden event that we refer to as the rapture today.
What causes so many people to fear or even disdain it? Is it the abrupt nature? Is it the suddenness or unexpectedness of it? Is it the unknown or supernatural? Perhaps many fear that their dreams for this life will end too soon. Why should they look forward to such an unexpected end to all their aspirations for their future?
I suspect many of us can identify with at least a few of the above reasons for anxiety regarding rapture. I have felt many of these apprehensions at times in the past as I wondered about what might happen when Jesus suddenly takes me to heaven.
Others imagine the worst when they think of the rapture. They regard the Lord’s quick removal of believers from planet Earth as a judgment upon them. How could God do this to his people? Why would anyone believe in such a horrible event that will wreak so much havoc in the lives of so many, including those left on the earth? As such, they reject the whole idea of the rapture as something terrible and awful.
Does Scripture give us any help to relieve our anxieties and hesitations regarding the rapture? Is there a way to look at it that sparks delight and hopefulness in us rather than fear or even disdain? Can we see it as act of love on the part of a caring, just, and compassionate Savior? Is there a way look at the rapture in the same way Louis Talbot looked forward to seeing Jesus?
I believe there is.
One comforting biblical picture of the rapture is that of a bridegroom coming for his bride. I believe that both Jesus and the apostle Paul purposely used language to invoke depictions of the first century AD Jewish wedding customs of their day when referring to the rapture. This imagery does much to relieve any lingering qualms about it.
As we examine these marriage traditions in future posts, we will see a picture that washes away our apprehensions regarding it as well as removes any lingering repulsions regarding it. Instead, the idea of the rapture will cause excitement to bubble to the surface of our hearts as we look into the wonders in store for us when Jesus appears.

Part 2:
The Marriage Covenant
While in college at John Brown University, I read Hal Lindsey’s book The Late Great Planet Earth. His book greatly heightened my interest in prophecy to the point where I expected the rapture to occur at any moment, yes even back in the 1970’s.
Late one afternoon, I dozed off after hours of reading and studying. Suddenly, the sound of a trumpet awoke me from a deep sleep. For a brief moment, I thought “this is it; I am going to meet Jesus in the air.” After a second or two, I realized the trumpet fanfare came from someone warming up for a nearby rehearsal. It was not the trumpet sound of 1 Thessalonians 4, which still remains a joyous future hope for all of Jesus’ followers.
However, I know many people today do not take kindly to the idea of the rapture. They either fear it or disdain it for a variety of reasons. It’s certainly a source of unpopularity for those who teach or write about it; I know this from experience.
Is there a way to view the rapture differently, as something positive and loving?
Yes, there is. Jesus and the apostle Paul used terminology similar to a first century AD wedding to describe His return for His bride. In this way they put the rapture into a loving, hopeful context for believers.
The Marriage Covenant
Jewish marriages in Jesus’ day began with the groom entering into a marriage covenant with his bride. The groom drank a cup of wine with his bride during the betrothal ceremony that “sealed the covenant.” The groom then paid “bridal price” to the father as part of the ceremony joining the couple together.[i] The bridal price ensured that the groom would later follow through with his part of the covenant. Although many months ahead of the actual wedding, the covenant indicated that the couple was legally married or “betrothed.”
We see this in the story of Joseph and Mary who were “betrothed” but still living apart. Joseph had entered into a marriage covenant with Mary and her father, but the couple had not yet married or consummated their relationship.
When Joseph found out about Mary’s pregnancy, he sought to divorce her since he knew the child could not be his. Even though they were not yet married, divorce was the only way to break the legally binding marriage covenant Joseph had earlier pledged himself to. He could not just walk away as one can today from an engagement. Before Joseph could take any action, however, an angel soon appeared to him to confirm Mary’s story that the Holy Spirit had conceived the child (Matt. 2:18-22).
Do you see the similarities between the marriage covenant and what Jesus did for us in purchasing our salvation on the cross? He paid the price with his blood so that we, his church, might become his bride. Jesus’ words regarding the cup of wine he drank with his disciples in the upper room resemble those spoken by a groom sealing the marriage covenant with his bride, “In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood . . .’” (1 Cor. 11:25).
The drinking of wine from a cup and his announcement of a covenant sparked images of the Jewish marriage customs as well as Old Testament prophecies regarding the new covenant (Jer. 31:31-34). The cup represented Jesus’ very own blood, which He shed as a payment for our sins. He paid the price so we could inherit eternal life, so that we as His church could become His bride.
In ancient Israel, the groom paid the bridal price as a demonstration that he would follow through on his promises. Just think, Jesus gave his very life as the “bridal price” for us. Christ guaranteed his promise to come and take us back to his Father’s house with his own blood. It doesn’t get any more certain than that, or better for that matter.
But, you ask, what does this have to do with the rapture? As we shall see, this signifies the beginning of the love relationship between Jesus and His church that culminates in the rapture and the marriage supper of the Lamb.
The tie between Jesus’ words in the Upper Room and the first century Jewish marriage customs becomes even clearer as we dig deeper.

Part 3:
The Joy of Jesus’ Return
When I was a pastor, I loved performing weddings. I remember seeing the joy on everyone’s face when the big day arrived.
Now, and I hesitantly admit this, I enjoy watching romantic movies on the Hallmark channel, along with my wife, that sometimes lead to a wedding. In these shows, we see the excitement and exuberance of the happy couple, although Hallmark always tosses in a few problems to keep viewers hooked (we anxiously wait to see what will happen but really never doubt the happy outcome).
Weddings are typically times of excitement to which both the future husband and wife joyously anticipate.
I believe this is why Jesus used words reminiscent of the first century AD Jewish wedding customs when He first mentioned His return to take believers back to His Father’s house, known today as the rapture (see John 14:1-3). His announcement would have sparked positive and hopeful comparisons to the disciples as they listened to Him that night in the Upper Room.
The Announcement
Once the bridegroom confirmed the marriage covenant with his bride, he announced that he was going to prepare a place for his bride in his father’s house.[i] He would not see his bride again until he completed his work on their honeymoon chamber and returned to take her back to his father’s house and to the place he had prepared for her.
Jesus’ words in John 14:2-3 mimic this announcement given by ancient Jewish bridegrooms, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”
I believe Jesus purposely chose words to show how His actions resembled a groom leaving to prepare a place for his bride. Just like the grooms of his day, He announced His intention to prepare a bridal chamber in his Father’s house and promised to return take his bride, the church, back to the place He had prepared.
Jesus’ words would not have failed to spark pictures in the minds of the disciples of the wedding customs of their day.
The mention of “many rooms” further expands the comparison. In Jesus’ day, the groom only prepared one room for his wife. Jesus is preparing places for millions upon millions of his followers who comprise His glorious bride, the church.
Do not let the huge number of believers discourage you; I believe Jesus is preparing a place just for you! This alone should be more than enough to stir your hearts with great anticipation of His return for us.
The Return of the Bridegroom
The Jewish bridegroom, after he finished work on the bridal chamber, returned to take his bride back to the place he had prepared. Below is how one writer describes the groom’s return for his bride:
“When the bridegroom’s father deemed the wedding chamber ready, the father would tell the bridegroom that all was ready and to get his bride. The bridegroom would abduct his bride secretly, like a thief at night, and take her to the wedding chamber. As the bridegroom approached the bride’s home, he would shout and blow the shofar (ram’s horn trumpet) so that she had some warning to gather her belongings to take into the wedding chamber. The bridegroom and his friends would come into the bride’s house and get the bride and her bridesmaids.”[ii]
The Jewish groom of Jesus’ day enjoyed coming as a “thief in the night” to quickly snatch away his bride and take her back to the place he had prepared in his father’s house. He typically arrived at her home with much fanfare as his friends shouted and blew a shofar or trumpet to announce his arrival.
After that, the groom took his bride back to the bridal chamber for seven days. This snatching away, if you will, was something the bride looked forward to with great excitement as she longed for the day her groom would “kidnap” her and take her back to her bridal chamber, the one her groom had prepared for her.
In 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul tells us that Jesus will come for his church with a shout, the “voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God” (v. 16). These are all terms that resemble the raucous scene of first century Jewish grooms coming for their brides.
Anyone who lived in a city where there was a large population of Jews, such as Thessalonica, would associate Paul’s words with a groom coming for his bride. Who could forget such loud commotion in the middle of the night?
This is precisely what Jesus promised to do in John 14:2-3. When Christ comes for us, he will take us home to the place he is specially preparing for us, just as the first century Jewish grooms did for their brides.
Notice that in ancient times the groom did not return for his bride until his father said the wedding chamber was ready. The groom’s father determined the timing of both the honeymoon and wedding celebration that followed. Once he determined the preparations were adequate and the time was right, he told his son to go get his bride.
Notice Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:36, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven nor the Son, but the Father only.” Do you see how this also fits into the Jewish wedding customs? Just as the father of the groom determined when his son would go to fetch his bride, so our Heavenly Father determines the timing of the rapture, or Jesus’ return to take us back to his Father’s house.
Someday, perhaps soon, the Father will tell his Son to go get his bride, to go get us! What a time of rejoicing and great celebration that will be for us!
In the meantime, we will continue on with the encouraging similarities between the rapture and the first century marriage customs.

The Work of God is here on this earth, Christ is returning as KING of kings i.e. the resurrected Saints of God rule as kings with Christ on His throne here on this earth to complete the Work of God.

Paul, as did all the Apostles, taught from what is called “the Old testament” and here Paul states The old Testament which includes the Torah has every thing necessary for salvation.

guys — the new testament was not written while Timothy was a child —- all Timothy had was what is called today the old testament and Paul says that is all Timothy needed for salvation which is in Jesus Christ.

The New Testament MUST match the Instruction of the Old, the Old is the measure by which the New can be understood and in the old there is no rapture taught nor a trinity nor going to heaven nor sunday etc.

Another sad issue is there are some sects within christianity that before you can “join” their denomination you must blindly believe their rapture story.
They now require it as a statement of faith. I find it all to be delusion and divisive, but that is most of what I saw for too many years within christianity. People loved you if you believed the same things they did…when you questioned them they would label you as a heretic.
