Magical Games: Rivers of London - The RPG Now Out

Rivers of London, by Ben Ben Aaronovitch, has long been my favourite urban fantasy series set in my home city, and I was over the moon when I got the opportunity to write the London section for Rivers of London: The Roleplaying Game. Well, the game is now available to buy as a PDF from publisher Chaosium. A physical book will be available soon.

The novels are about modern-day wizards in a police department solving cases where magic might have been involved. In the RPG, players take on the roles of newly recruited members of the London Metropolitan Police Service’s special magic branch, aka “the Folly.” The game involves solving mysteries, catching criminals, and coming to grips with the “demi-monde”—those who have been changed by magic. The core rulebook contains everything needed to start exploring Ben Aaronovitch’s magical version of London in gameplay.

I should mention that I’m named Lucya Szachnowski rather than Lucya Starza on the list of contributors. Both Szachnowski and Starza are names in my family – my father’s name was Antoni Starza Szachnowski. I’ve written for Chaosium before, including co-writing The London Guidebook: 1920s Orientation for Roleplayers in the Capital of the World for Call of Cthulhu. I decided to use Lucya Starza as a name when I started my blog, mainly because I was somewhat in the broom closet due to issues surrounding my full-time job. Nowadays I write my practical magic witchcraft books as Starza, but use Szachnowski as my surname for roleplaying game things and some other work. I’m happy to be called either.
