Nine days earlier, the Missouri basketball team appeared somewhere between fried and frayed — or exposed as not so good a year after losing three career 1,000-point scorers from an Elite Eight run.
After all, the Tigers had lost three of their last four games, were mauled 75-60 by a crummy Nebraska team in the first round of the Big 12 tournament and seemed to trudge into their NCAA Tournament opener against Clemson.
But between the shock of the Nebraska loss, Clemson playing a style that helped the Tigers regain their lost rhythm and coach Mike Anderson’s apparent knack for the NCAAs, revitalized Missouri pulled away from Clemson in the final 10 minutes and fended off a rally to triumph 86-78 at HSBC Arena.
Missouri (23-10), seeded 10th in the East Regional, advanced to play second-seeded West Virginia (28-6) on Sunday.
“When you get to tournament play, they understand: It’s about energy now,” said Anderson, now 4-1 in first-round games and 7-4 overall in NCAA tourney play. “It ain’t the X’s and O’s. It’s who wants it the most.”
