MLS Avoids Strike, Players Get New Deal

In what could have been a devastating strike, Major League Soccer officials and its players came to a five-year deal on Saturday.
League officials and the 16 times that comprise the whole body of teams in the MLS signed a contract that would prevent any players from going on strike, the NY Times writes.
There was rumors that there would be a potential strike before the start of the 2010 season, which starts in a few days.
“This has been a major victory for the process of collective bargaining,” Cohen said in a Seattle Times article.
League officials and the players union for the past several weeks were scrambling to etch out a new deal in order to prevent the strike.
A possible strike could have potentially cripple the league, putting efforts initiated by MLS back several years to gain a foothold in the U.S.
The Miami Herald said that “the union entered negotiations wanting major changes to that structure, including greater free-agent rights and a higher percentage of guaranteed contracts.”
