It’s been seven years since the Baylor basketball program was rocked by the murder of one of its players by a teammate. And even though the Bears have been transformed into a winner under Scott Drew since Patrick Dennehy‘s death and the ensuing scandal that disgraced former coach Dave Bliss, the reputation is tough to shake.
Baylor would rather its name spark thoughts of big victories, and Saturday night the Bears took a big step in that direction by closing their South Region second-round game against Old Dominion in overpowering fashion for a 76-68 triumph.
The third-seeded Bears, who on Thursday won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1950, are going to the Sweet 16. Baylor (27-7) meets No. 10 Saint Mary’s on Friday in Houston.
“This win means a lot. I came here to be a part of something special,” said New Orleans product Tweety Carter, who had 12 points and eight assists. “We’ve still got work to do, but I’m going to enjoy this win. You know, just stay focused and get prepared for Saint Mary’s.”
The Bears got sloppy with their 10-point halftime lead and 11th-seeded Old Dominion (27-9) clawed its way back into the game and into the lead. The Monarchs were up 58-56 on a layup by center Gerald Lee. Baylor had 12 possessions from that point and scored on 10.
