McDowell Wins Celtic Manor Wales Open 2010 - Book Ryder Cup Accommodation in Wales
Graeme McDowell shot the round of his life at The Celtic Manor Wales Open by winning 15-under par.
The Ulsterman bettered his third round 64 with an excellent 63 yesterday, putting him in contention for this year’s Ryder Cup also to be hosted at Celtic Manor in Wales.
Local hero Rhys Davies, who won in Morocco this year and came 2nd in Madrid last week proved to his home crowd that he has the capability to compete at the highest level by shooting the course record (62) to take second place.
McDowell, started the final day tied fourth, but soon took control with eight birdies in his first 11 holes semonstrating a stunning short game display.
“I couldn’t imagine playing the first 11 holes as I did – it was dream stuff,” said the 30-year-from Portrush.
“This is the finest final round I have ever played to win a golf tournament.” Yesterday’s win sent McDowell from 22nd to tenth in the Ryder Cup standings.
“This is a huge step for me,” he said. “I needed a big summer. I figured I would need to win once or twice.”
“It is a feather in my cap to win here if I need a nod from the captain but I hope to play golf and get in the team on my own merit.” “

Davies blazed into contention with a red-hot run including six birdies and an eagle at the 8th. “
It is a bitter-sweet because I would have taken a 62 if you had offered me it this morning,” said the 25-year-old from Bridgend.
