Portland Guard CJ McCollum Has Knee Strain, Will Be Re-Examined Next Week

It was a scary moment for the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night, as guard CJ McCollum crashed to the floor clutching his knee during their loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

There is good news today though, and that is McCollum has a popliteus strain in his left knee, and he should be able to be back at some point for the Blazers in the postseason.

If you check any wv online sportsbooks, the Blazers chances at a long playoff run are not in their favor with any sort of long term injury to McCollum.

The guard was injured after landing awkwardly with 7:17 remaining in the third quarter and left the game and did not return, but ESPN says that he avoided a serious injury that could have cost him the rest of the year, and he will be looked at again in about a week.

X-rays on the knee on Saturday night came up negative, a good sign, however the MRI showed the strain in his left knee, which should keep him out for a bit.

The injury took place in the third quarter when McCollum went down to the floor after landing. Right away he grabbed his left knee in pain as his teammates huddled around him.

He had scored 10 points in 22 minutes at the time of the injury, which was scary for all involved and had Blazer fans gasping for air.

When he left the game he had scored 10 points in 22 minutes.

“I went up for a layup, a left-hand layup, and big fella [former Blazer Jakob Poeltl] blocked it,” McCollum said after Saturday’s game.

“I landed on my foot, kind of trapped my foot on the ground, felt my knee kind of twist. I was in pain. It hurts. You never want to get hurt, man. Not ever, especially at this point in the season.

“There’s nothing I can do about it but rehab and see what they say. I can walk, but I’m not sure what the extent of it is. Obviously, on the replay it’s hard to kind of see it because my foot is trapped and his body is there. But there’s some discomfort, some pain in certain areas. So we’ll see what happens.”

Right now the Blazers are in fourth in the Western Conference of the NBA, as they sit at 42-27, and they have to maintain that 4th spot if they are going to have home court for the first round of the playoffs.

McCollum is second on the Trail Blazers in scoring this season, averaging 21.3 points per game in 68 games.
