Chiefs DE Chris Jones Shows Up to Camp Despite Not Getting a New Deal

Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones has decided to not hold out of training camp in the midst of contract negotiations according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Jones skipped the offseason program and June minicamp lobbying for a new deal and there was some uncertainty about training camp when it appeared that Jones did not arrive Friday morning with his teammates. He did, however, report for the first scheduled team meeting at 2pm.

“He knows his value and if he has to play out his deal in order to reach free agency, then that’s what he will do,” agents Jason and Michael Katz told Schefter. “For now, he’s focused on winning a Super Bowl for Kansas City.”

A second-round pick out of Mississippi State in 2016, the 25-year-old Jones is scheduled to make just under $1.2 million in the last year of his rookie deal and there is not doubt he has massively outplayed that contract.

Jones has started every game in his first three seasons in the NFL and had a tremendous year in 2018 with 40 tackles, 15.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception-numbers topped only by 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald and former DPOY J.J. Watt.

Getting a longterm deal done with Jones is the Chiefs’ No.1 priority.
