Giants Coach Pat Shurmur Doesn’t Want to Hear About Rebuilding – Is He Crazy?

New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur isn’t hearing it when it comes to last season’s last place team (yes, that would be the Giants) rebuilding this season.

The Giants appear to be in the mode of the dreaded ‘R’ word. They spent the offseason making head scratching moves that if you look at New York Giants betting lines for 2019, not many have faith in this team.

The club’s General Manager, Dave Gettleman, drew ire from just about all Giants fans when he moved popular play-making all-world former first round pick wide out Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.

The March 12th trade of Beckham to the Browns saw the Giants net back a player and draft choices. They received a first-round pick (No. 17 overall) the second of the Browns’ third-round picks (No. 95) and safety Jabrill Peppers.

That wasn’t the only move that the Giants made with the Browns that some questioned. The team four days before the blockbuster move to trade Beckham moved outside linebacker Oliver Vernon to Cleveland for offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler.

The Giants wanted out of Vernon’s contract, and there’s been health issues with the linebacker, but at the same time at times teams that are looking to win need to eat contracts of players that can make plays – and when healthy, Oliver can make plays.

One last move made Giants fans go nuts this offseason, that being their first-round draft pick of a quarterback.

It’s not that the Giants drafted a quarterback with their first pick, it’s who they took.

The club snagged Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, a player who that fans were not as high on as another QB who played for Ohio State the last few seasons that was a true playmaker – Dwayne Haskins.

Haskins is a player who could lead the team into the future, and here’s something else – he wanted to come play for his hometown team in the Giants.

But Shurmur doesn’t think the team is in a rebuild.

“I like the way our team’s coming together,” Shurmur said via the New York Post. “We’re putting together a team that’s working hard and competing, and our goal is to put a winning team on the field. And I believe we can do it.”

Shurmur thinks that every season you sort of have to reset, and while they don’t want to use that ‘R’ word, it really seems like this is a team in the rebuild mode.

“Every year you re-establish your culture,” Shurmur said. “You don’t always play the next year with all the same guys from the previous year. I think more was made of it this year probably because we made so many changes.”

All fans can do is wait and see – if they fail – fans can say ‘I told you so,’ if they succeed fans can be surprised at the way this team worked out and changed this roster on the fly.
