Three Questions About the Browns as Training Camp Gets Closer

Last season was an up and down season for the Browns, a season which started once again with a tough start that saw the team go 2-6-1, but then out of nowhere turn around after coach Hue Jackson was fired.

The team showed new energy with rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield slinging the ball all over the field setting a rookie record with 27 scores.

1. A Baker Repeat

Mayfield came off the bench and quickly asserted himself as a rising star in the game, showing poise and moxie as a player who might be the best QB this team has had since Bernie Kosar.

The club sorely needs Mayfield to have another huge season, just like 2018 when he threw for 3725 yards with 27 touchdowns.

2. Kitchens with Plenty to Prove

The Browns took what some felt was a chance when they named OC Freddie Kitchens as the new head coach of this franchise.

The players love him, the city is buying in, but he’s got a lot to prove with a roster of superstars and a fan base that expects wins – and a lot of them.

They can’t get off to a slow start, and with a roster of talented players, they have to live up to the potential that many feel they have.

3. A Defense that Has to Set the Tempo

Led by former first-round pick Myles Garrett and a number of other high picks, the Browns defense needs to set the tempo and make plays.

Overall the defense was 21st in the league allowing 392 points, 24.5 points per game. That number needs to be a lot lower if this team is going to find itself in a position to make the playoffs.

The secondary will be tested, and the run defense also needs to play better. Let’s not forget in the final game of the regular season the defense allowed nearly 300 yards rushing to the Ravens – that simply can’t happen again in 2019.

Steven Wilks is going to get the chance to mold this defense in training camp, and he’s got to get this defense playing at a high level right away once camp gets started.
