Three Questions About the Chiefs as Training Camp Gets Started

An amazing season that ended just short.

That’s probably the best way to sum up the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs, who won their division, were the top seed in all the AFC, and took the eventual Super Bowl champion Patriots to overtime of the AFC Championship Game.

They had the best player in the league in Pat Mahomes, and while they had their own in-season issues to deal with like the release of Kareem Hunt, the team rallied and played as well as any team in the NFL.

Now it’s time for 2019, and as camp gets going, let’s look at a couple quick questions about this team.

1. It’s Damien Williams’ Time to Prove His Worth

Last season the team had to shift midseason from Kareem Hunt being the lead running back to Damien Williams, and needless to say the former special team’s ace delivered.

Williams ended the season with 256 yards, a 5.1 yards per carry average. He ran for four scores and also caught 23 passes out of the backfield.

He is going to get competition from Carlos Hyde and Darrel Williams, but it’s Damien’s job to lose as camp opens, and he needs to bust down the door.

2. A Mahomes Repeat?

No one could have possibly seen coming the breakout MVP season from Pat Mahomes, who finished the campaign with 50 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a league MVP award to boot.

He’s going to be pressed to put up monster numbers again in 2019, and that’s probably unrealistic, but he may end up actually having a better season with worse numbers.

Mahomes is going to have to continue to mature into the leader of the team, as despite being the MVP there were times he needed in 2018 to have a bigger voice in the huddle.

Let’s see if this camp plays out with a more vocal Mahomes.

3. Steve Spagnuolo Needs to Light a Fire Under the D

Last season the Chiefs allowed 425.6 yards per game, a number that has to improve if this team is going to reach the Super Bowl.

It will be up to Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to turn last seasons bad numbers on D around, and that has to start day one of camp.

Spagnuolo knows Chiefs coach Andy Reid he was a member of his defensive staff in Philadelphia, and also has time as a head coach in the league.

The Chiefs have a different scheme than what Spagnuolo is use to running, but that can’t be the reason this D doesn’t get on track in 2019.

If not, it could be another season of games with scores like 54-51 – with the Chiefs on the short end of the stick.
