NFL Announces that Four-Game Suspension of Giants WR Golden Tate Stands

Giants receiver Golden Tate’s appeal of a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy has been denied, meaning that he will miss the first four games of the regular season.

US Bookies will for sure have to take into consideration the fact that Tate will not be around for games one through four.

He can continue to practice and play in the preseason games but will not be allowed around his new team or its facilities for the first four weeks of the regular season. He will be due back to be with the team on Monday, September 30th.

Tate made his in-person plea to an arbitrator in New York City after last Tuesday’s practice. The decision took longer than the anticipated three-day window because an arbitrator can request a transcript of the hearing and reset the clock but coach Pat Shurmur was “anticipating” an outcome Tuesday morning.

After the NFL’s decision came down, Tate, who has fought hard to maintain his innocence in the case, released a statement per Ralph Vacchiano.

Tate’s point is that the NFL has a no tolerance policy on drugs:

“This morning I received the unfortunate news that my appeal was denied. I went into this arbitration with the understanding that due to the facts, unlike many other cases, we could be the exception to win. Unfortunately the NFL stood by their no tolerance policy, which I hope one day to help have a part in reforming, so no other player has to go through this situation.

“I greatly appreciate the support from the Giants since long before an outcome was even determined. Additionally, it has meant so much to hear the Giants fan’s support each day at training camp and I am so proud to be a part of this organization. No one is more upset than myself, but moving forward, all I can do is continue to be a leader, continue to hold myself to the highest character and integrity, and soon make the biggest impact on the field.”

With the Giants wide out core already banged up due to injuries, Tate was expected to be able to fill in the void until they could get through some early season rough patches due to injury.

The team inked Tate to a four-year, $37.5 million deal back in March. He came to the team via free agency from the Detroit Lions.
