As the Chargers Ground Game Continues to Plod; So Will the Offense
The Los Angeles Chargers have had no consistency to their offense early in the 2019 season, part of the reason the team has gotten off to such a slow start.
The Bolts offense has not put the team in a good position, as they sit at 2-4 after six games. If you signup at Novibet you can still put money on the Chargers rebounding, but as of now, it’s been a complete struggle to watch this proud unit go nowhere fast.
“There’s no rhythm you can get into with eight carries, I don’t care what running back you are,” Chargers workhorse running back Melvin Gordon said, via ESPN’s Eric D. Williams. “I get stronger down the line.”
Maybe it is just that simple in having to give the ball more to Gordon, but when your offense puts you behind the eight-ball like they did Sunday evening against the Steelers, everything seems to be a struggle.
“With the more carries you get, you run that play and you’re like, ‘Okay, this is how they are playing it.’ So when you run that play again, I know how I’m going to treat it,” Gordon said.
“But when you get eight carries, you’ve seen the same play for the first time every time. There’s no feel to it, and you never get a feel for the game.”
The Bolts plan for success is a simple one, run the ball with backs like Gordon to set up the pass with Philip Rivers trying to go downfield to the likes of Mike Williams and others.
The problem though has been simple, the run game has done nothing to install confidence in the pass game, and everything has broken down from there.
In two games, Gordon is averaging 43.0 scrimmage yards per game, and has yet to score a touchdown. He has 20 carries in two games for 49 yards and is averaging 2.4 yards per carry, an average that isn’t going to get it done against any team in the NFL.
Sunday it might have been as worst as it’s been this season. The team sat staring at a 24-0 deficit before they were able to make it a game, but by then it was much too little, too late.
“I don’t think it has anything to do with Melvin Gordon,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said earlier this week when asked about the RB’s struggles returning for a holdout.
“We’ve got to open up more running lanes.”
Running the ball is going to open up a whole new world for the Chargers offense. Until they can do that though, it’s going to be tough sledding in the city of Angels.
