New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady did not play one snap of the Super Bowl this season, yet this entire week he was a huge storyline in Miami where the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49’ers did battle in Super Bowl 54.
Brady, who is eligible to hit free agency this March, is in control of his plans moving forward as well as where he will play in 2020 and for the future.
Some think it’s just a matter of time before he and the Pats come to a deal, while others think he’s ready for a new challenge and will move on, shifting all the NFL odds that were placed Monday which said the Pats were 15/1 to win next year’s Super Bowl.
Patriot fans though should feel a little better as Sunday Ian Rapoport reported that the team was willing to pay Brady in excess of $30 million to keep him in New England playing quarterback.
“My understanding that going back to New England is a legitimate and real option, obviously, and they are willing to make it worth his while,” Rapoport said during the NFL Network’s pregame coverage.
I’m told they are willing to pay him in excess of $30 million if that’s what it’s going to take to bring Brady back.”
Now the question is pretty simple – is money going to be the deciding factor for Brady to come back to the Patriots – or does he want the challenge of going to another team?
“We’ll see if that’s enough. From what I understand, he wants a commitment from them that they will spend specifically on weapons,” Rapoport said Sunday.
The weapons on the Patriots in 2019 were clearly not enough to repeat as Super Bowl champions, and by the time the team lost in the AFC Wild Card game to the Tennessee Titans, you could see the gas tank was pretty much on empty.
There are rumors that two teams have jumped in the mix to grab Brady should he reach the free agent market, that being the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers.
Both those teams would snatch up Brady in a second if they could, as the Chargers are expected to be losing Philip Rivers via free agency, and Raider coach Jon Gruden is very willing to move on from Derek Carr.
NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo reported that if in fact Brady does take an offer elsewhere and leaves New England, the team would then try and trade for a veteran quarterback.
No matter how you cut it, it’s going to be a stressful time for Pats fans until Brady makes up his mind.
