As a possible answer to a previous question I have asked – WHEN WILL RUGBY RETURN? – it is being reported that plans are being drawn up by the RFU for community rugby to be played without scrummaging, tackling or mauling next season so as to comply with social-distancing measures.
An RFU working group is said to be working on something described as “rugby activity” which reduces levels of contact – the idea being to ensure that club players continue to play rugby next season, even if full contact is not allowed until sometime next year.
And no, today is not 1st April.
I guess something is better than nothing and it looks to me that what we are talking about here is a form of Touch Rugby.
That won’t suit everyone, but equally I am sure that there are a number of players who would be nervous about playing full contact until the threat of Covid-19 has been eradicated or at least significantly diminished. To be honest, even with such reduced contact, the threat of infection remains.
The whole situation is hugely unsatisfactory and, at youth level in particular, this will undoubtedly affect players’ development but, to use a well-worn phrase, “it is what it is” and, as I said before, something is better than nothing.
