How Horse Racing Has Survived the Pandemic

While the coronavirus pandemic is decimating our healthcare systems and economy, it seems as though it hasn’t dampened our love of horse racing. This is because there has been the resumption of major horse racing events all over the world.

As of late spring, there have been many legendary horse races taking place. These have included some of the most cherished race meetings with the Royal Ascot horse race taking place in England in June.

All of these race meetings took place under strict social distancing measures. This meant that there were no crowds at the races, and there were strict limitations on how many journalists could attend. Face masks formed a sobering contrast to the usual pomp and splendour of such historic race meetings, but that didn’t stop the virtual race-goer phenomenon from taking part.

The resumption of such races was one of the first sports to have made a comeback since lockdown measures were introduced in many places all over the world as of mid-Spring. Unlike other sports like rugby and football, horse racing is by-nature socially distanced. While there was strict regulation over how the jockeys and trainers could interact, the initial race meetings showed how sport could be carried out in the ‘new normal’.

Such race meetings also provided some much-needed viewing for entertainment-starved sports fans. With many of the bookmakers featured on sites like www.horsebetting.com taking bets for the improvised race meetings, it showed that there was real hunger for racing to resume as before.

As a result, there has been the gradual roll-out of many legendary race meetings all over the world. The pandemic may have put pay to many of the most popular Spring horse races such as the much-loved Grand National, but there’s every indication that races like the Kentucky Derby could go ahead, despite initially being cancelled in May.

The Kentucky Derby is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday, 5 September. This will make it the first Kentucky Derby since World War II that hasn’t taken place on the first Saturday in May. The decision was made in a bid to avoid large crowds forming over the traditional Labor Day weekend. The Kentucky Oaks race will now be run on Friday, 4 September.

Given the sheer scale of the Kentucky Derby, a number of extra measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of the participants. The first weekend of September was chosen due to the relative lack of other sporting events happening on those days. Plus it was thought that there would be a greater availability of hotel rooms in Louisville – the home of the famous Churchill Downs racecourse.

Kentucky was just one of many US states that was forced to shut down its racing operations. Esteemed racecourses like Pennysylvania’s Parx Racing were hit hard by the lockdown, and there was no Sunland Derby in New Mexico this year.

Some racetracks did manage to complete a standard racing calendar behind closed doors. The famous Santa Anita racetrack succeeded in running races as scheduled, while racing continued in Arkansas.

However, much of these efforts are still at the mercy of how legislators in the US get to grips with the ongoing pandemic. With cases of infection still skyrocketing, there’s every fear that the nation could be struck by a second wave when colder weather resumes.

But with plenty of care being undertaken by race organizers around the world, there’s every hope that horse racing will be allowed to continue in this strange new era.
