Autumn Nations Cup - and now for something completely different…

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Yes, the Autumn Nations Cup is upon us, born out of necessity in the absence of tours from the Southern Hemisphere this November thanks to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The format is somewhat unusual, involving 8 teams split into 2 Pools.

Pool A comprises England, Ireland, Wales and Georgia, while Pool B contains France, Scotland, Italy and Fiji.

The idea is that each team plays every other team in their group over three successive weekends, with “finals” due to be played on the first weekend in December, where the top-ranked team in Pool A plays the top-ranked team in Pool B, the second-ranked team in Pool A plays their Pool B equivalent and so on, to decide the final placings, 1st to 8th.

And so to Round 1 where Ireland and Wales kick things off tonight in Dublin. Both teams are undergoing difficulties under new coaching teams but Ireland look a little more at ease with themselves and I’ll think they will win this by 9-12 points.

Tomorrow’s early kick off sees Scotland travel to Florence to play Italy. The Scots definitely feel on the up these days and, despite the loss to injury of their first and second choice fly halves, should still have too much for Italy. Comfortable 15+ point win for Scotland.

We then see England take on Georgia at Twickenham. It’s great to see Georgia on the big stage and I am sure they will give a robust account of themselves. England looked very rusty last time out and I am not expecting a huge amount of fluidity again tomorrow. A 20+ point victory, nevertheless.

Finally on Sunday France plays host to Fiji. If France can carry through recent momentum into this game we could be due a feast, with Fiji also playing their part. I foresee a high scoring game and a 20+ point win for Les Bleus.

But whatever happens, having 4 straight weekends of international rugby to watch can only be a good thing, right?
