When in doubt...prevaricate

I see the RFU and Premiership Rugby have been at their decisive best today.

Yes, it appears as if the much-anticipated decision on whether to scrap relegation from the Premiership this season, due to take place today, has been delayed.

The Premiership clubs, apparently, would like more time “to conclude consultation with stakeholders”.In other words they need to persuade broadcast rights holder, BT Sport, that it’s a good idea.

Frankly, given the shambolic nature of the current Premiership season, I would have said suspending relegation at the end of this season, and promoting one or two teams from the Championship (almost certainly Saracens and Ealing) is something of a no-brainer.

As I have previously said, however, on a number of occasions (what, me, repeating myself?) a far more comprehensive belt and braces reform of professional club rugby in England is way overdue.
