The 5 Biggest Contracts in New York Jets History

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The most expensive contract in sports history is known to be Mahomes’ 10-year, half-billion-dollar agreement.

The Jets have never handed out a contract even close to that size in history. However, the club still boasts big and glorious deals with its players. Some of them turned out to be wasted money, while others paid off in full, and in this article, we take a look back with Telecomasia.net at the 5 biggest agreements signed with New York players.

Muhammad Wilkerson

Muhammad Wilkerson was to be one of the best defensive linemen in franchise history. With his performance, he earned a ticket to the Pro Bowl and was considered one of the best defensive players in the league. After the 2015 Pro Bowl, Wilkerson broke his leg, and the injury did not bode well.

But the club’s management decided to support the player and gave him a five-year contract worth $86 million in the offseason. This turned out to be a clear mistake, as Muhammad was never able to reach his level again and was released after 2 years. In 2018, the footballer signed a one-season contract with the Green Bay Packers, which was not renewed.

C.J. Mosley

The Jets board wanted so badly to lure Mosley away from the Baltimore Ravens that they gave him a five-year contract worth as much as $85 million. The former leader of the Ravens was supposed to lead New York to big victories, but due to a groin injury, he played only 2 games in the whole of 2019. The first year of the contract failed, but then COVID-19 came and C.J. missed another season.

Now, after 2 games for the team, the Jets are looking for an opportunity to trade a defender with an expensive contract. The four-time Pro Bowler was once considered one of the best inside linebackers but is now a player who hasn’t entered the field since September 2019.

Trumaine Johnson

Another fresh failed deal. In 2018, New York was so impressed with the cornerback’s play for the Rams that they decided to give him a five-year, $72.5 million contract, expecting to get a top cornerback in his prime. At the time, Johnson was entering his 7th season in the NFL.

But, as it turned out, the 65th pick of the 2012 draft had shown his best in Los Angeles. And with the Jets, he was just a shadow of Johnson they expected to see. After two seasons in New York, the decision was made to let the player, who is still a free agent, go.

Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis is the 14th pick in the 2007 draft from the Jets. The player spent 6 seasons in New York, of which 4 times got to the Pro Bowl and three times (in 2009-2011) entered the First-team All-Pro. The cornerback then spent a season for the Bucs and Patriots until the Big Apple decided to reunite with the veteran. Revis’ return didn’t come cheap, $70 million for a five-year contract with the 2014 Super Bowl champion.

Darrelle had a good first season after the comeback. He was called back to the Pro Bowl, albeit without the First-team All-Pro, as in the season for the Patriots, but in 2016 the 31-year-old corner began to regress sharply, and the Jets rushed to get rid of a footballer who had 3 years left under the contract. Revis spent another season with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, after which he ended up with the NFL.

D’Brickashaw Ferguson

Ferguson’s story is perhaps the simplest of today’s top picks. The offensive tackle was selected by the Jets in the 2006 draft with the 4th pick. The player got off to a brisk start for the club and made the PFWA NFL All-Rookie Team in his first year. After proving his worth and need for the club by playing with a rookie contract, the player was re-signed to the Big Apple in 2010, signing a six-year, $60 million deal.

D’Brickashaw worked his contract to the best of his ability. He didn’t miss a game from the time he was signed until 2016 when he ended his career. It is the great legacy of one of the best offensive tackles in franchise history.
