This blogger does not think we should be doing much in terms of free agency except players who the scouting department seen have incredible strengthens or coachabilities. Etc.
If a player is extremely fast like the struggling Cincinnati Bengals WR Jonathan Ross—heck, Ross won an Island from Reebok for his speed—trade for him and line him up and use his speed, on every route, period. That is what are scouts are paid to be looking at film on YouTube every minute they can this whole offseason, right.
Yes. Our coaches also know our opponents so hopefully between coffee and crumpets they are watching every play of every opponent and game planning for as many wins as possible. Some say it is a long offseason, some disagree.
But what this blogger would like to see our GM staff do is have the guts to target a primetime player off the roster of a team or high in the draft and go get him.
The formula of how is very easy of how to build a winner in professional sports and this blogger believes is not being followed by any organization in particular.
Obviously, there is an infinity number of draft picks saying these leagues go on and on….second, the current flavor in the NFL is to assign numbers to picks like some starship of fantasy football, gambling and Vadar himself.
Please…lets go back to some good old George Allen—Bobby Beathard scout and acquisitioning WFT, even though if we go young to Allen’s over the hill gang.
See here is the formula: why not package many of our future picks to move up for high picks in this year draft and then do the same thing next season. People (pundits and fans and insiders, I guess—and Vadar) tend to say that it’s better to stockpile draft picks for future years and not lose your capital down the road. Blah, blah, blah.
Unless this is like the year when our three 2nd rounders (the WR Malcolm Kelly Oklahoma year—off this blogger head, this is a blog), where the players produced like 4 plays…3 1st rounders and a host of free agents at the end of the draft, waiver wires and practice squad pickups…did not we bring in a player like Eric Reed for a look last season. Heck, AP and DeAngelo Hall were free agents. Both excellent players and wonderful WFTs personalities. D. Hall was great on air this past year.
We have an unlimited quantity of years of drafts, right? Yes!
it’s been my experience that every year there is always have a history of picks each year GM Mayhew and Hurney and Polian and Williams can be trading fixed pieces and wound up with higher pieces. To get you by for that year with a primetime addition or a prize player who is falling. Last year, fans wanted Isiah Simmons for one, who had a great draft combine.
In 2019, WFT saw Montez Sweat was still available and acquired him..and people are still upset that WFT traded for the 1st and then did not have a 2nd this past year. In part, all the gripping about the lack of a 2nd and #2 WR was indirectly at Sweatz’s performance. Forget it! Two years, mostly starting and in a rotation with the ability to make plays—that is a successful draft pick in terms of helping build a winner. For every steal, there are many misses like 2018 4th rounder rb Samaje Perine.
Great move, Doug et al. Keep trading up and down and all around.
Happy that we got two 1st rounders that year especially considering Dwayne Haskins did not work out, understatement.
This blogger would love to see us trade a 2nd and 3rd and 1st rounder next year at this year’s draft for a high 1st and go get a wide receiver or a linebacker or even a work horse RB or make a trade for a primetime pro-bowl player still on a rookie contract like WR Calvin Ridley.
If WFT moved Antonio Gibson into a WR-RB-3rd down back capacity–personally, this blogger is more than happy with Gibson being our star work horse back and picked up a rb in the draft like Travis Etienne from Clemson. Heck, from the mocks Najee Harris is the only runner to possibly go in the 1st and player like Jamarr Chase might be the type of player to trade up for (since this blogger wrote this, now a QB trade up is a possibility).
But this blogger really liked Etienne in college, the HB looks like a George Rogers-Gerald Riggs=Clinton Portis type of runner potentially for even a WFT. Etienne going to be very gifted on the pro level.
The Washington Football Team has so many options but instead of us consider options which get us older and more experienced and well were more last decade good…let us gear next season towards early domination of the early part of the new decade.
Our team that can be young and aggressive and flying around the football on both offense defense and special teams coming into next season and almost every position except possibly QB where this blogger believes Alex Smith will start.
It’s still early and early on in a new decade==there’s no reason we can’t be one of those teams of this decade showing the NFL something it has not seen…well it is a new decade. WFT, today!
