Agholor It Is!

Members of the RSR Staff chime in on the Ravens signing of wide receiver Nelson Agholor.

Darin McCann

Let’s be honest here: Agholor is a step-up from what the Ravens put out on the field for a good chunk of last season.

Also being honest: The receiving unit is still not good enough.

In an ideal scenario, Agholor and Devin Duvernay split up that third/fourth receiver role, and he can spring a couple 50-plus-yard plays together over the course of the season. That would mean Rashod Bateman, Mark Andrews and fill-in-the-blank are doing their thing, and that would seem to be enough to at least jump-start the passing offense in a positive direction.

I think the drops with Agholor have been a little overblown, as his drop percentage has ranged from 1.6 to 6.1 throughout his career, per Pro Football Reference. To put that in perspective, Bateman’s was 14.3 last year, DeAndre Hopkins’ was 5.2, Ja’Marr Chase’s was 8.2 and Isaiah Likely’s was 10.0. Agholor was part of one of the world’s greatest memes because of his drops, however, and that made it probably a bigger issue than it has been in reality.

This does not make the Ravens’ receiving unit upper-echelon, or even “good.” It makes it slightly better than it was last year. Take that for what it’s worth.

A friend of mine texted me as soon as the news broke and he was ready to totally give up on the team and root for another. I frequently have to talk him off the ledge but this was bold. Am I excited about this signing? Of course not, but I also realize the position the team is in right now with the salary cap. The team cannot afford to take chances in case another team decides to offer Lamar a substantial offer sheet that the Ravens may be forced to match…or should they at this point?

I’ve been frequently joking Lamar wants a billion dollars fully guaranteed and half ownership of the team. It sure feels like that right now. Anyway back to Agholor, let’s just relax, it’s only March so the team is far from set. In reality he may not even make the team in final cuts and if he does it means he earned it. I would have been more excited about signing DeMarcus Robinson again. This offseason seems like it’s going to be a rocky one so sit tight and hope for the best.

*Deep sigh*

I’m not going to overreact to this, because hopefully by the time the season rolls around, it’ll be clear that Nelson Agholor is simply going to a role player out of the slot. Then again, we said DeMarcus Robinson was going to be a buy-low, “body in the room” kind of guy last year and look at how much we leaned on him.

It’s not a sexy move, but unfortunately, it’s what we can afford at the moment. My apprehensions come when you look at the issues faced by the Ravens receiving group last year: injuries and drops. Agholor has been known for both at different times, and despite being productive at the peak of his game, I fear that we won’t be shaking the specter of those problems anytime soon with his addition.

I hope I’m wrong.

Is it Groundhog Day?

T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Jeremy Maclin. Michael Crabtree. Dez Bryant. DeMarcus Robinson. Sammy Watkins. DeSean Jackson. Did I forget any? Now Nelson Agholor.

Please tell me I’m being unnecessarily pessimistic over this $3M spend.

Please describe the silver lining in this signing with your comments below.

Adam Bonaccorsi

I don’t get why anybody would get up in arms or upset about this signing.

The Ravens needed more than just one wideout, and Agholor provides solid veteran depth. He actually thrived prior to a nagging injury last year, but just as important? He comes in very cheap for a WR3/4 (cheaper than Duv!), and won’t effect the potential to keep Lamar Jackson in Baltimore OR sign/trade/draft a higher caliber wide receiver.
Solid addition to the thinnest positional group on the roster. That’s all this is, plain and simple!
