During a Night When Justice Was Ignored by Officials

What is “The Big Crab Cake”?

Each week we will select an unsung hero – a player whose contributions during a specific game contributed greatly to the team’s cause but whose efforts may have been overshadowed by some of the game’s more noteworthy highlights. In Maryland, steamed crabs are king but from those spoils emerge crab cakes, an understated byproduct of a Chesapeake Bay delicacy.

So, now that we’ve established what The Big Crab Cake is, who is the inaugural recipient?

Some players revel in the dirty work. They accept the responsibility of taking on tough assignments that when executed properly, allow others to shine and in doing so, they help improve the team’s chances of winning. Justice Hill is one of those guys.

In past seasons, Justice has been a big contributor on special teams. He subs during many down-and-distance situational packages that lend themselves to passing plays. Justice is adept in pass protection, and he has a keen sense of when, where and how to leak out of the backfield, providing Lamar Jackson with a comfortable safety valve if preferred progressions aren’t available. Last night in Kansas City, Hill did exactly that during the Ravens first possession. Justice was served!

Facing a 3rd-and-11 from their own 29 at the 13:29 mark of the first quarter, Lamar couldn’t find what he wanted downfield. So, he dumped it off to Hill who initially looked like he’d be taken down short of the sticks. Instead, Justice expertly navigated the sideline, advanced the ball 18 yards to help set up what would prove to be an 11-play, 70-yard TD drive, eating up 6:46 of game clock. The perfect recipe when facing the defending World Champions.

Overall, Justice had six receptions for 52 yards and ran purposefully after the catch during key moments in the game. But his contributions didn’t end there.

When he wasn’t asked to be a primary receiver or a checkdown, Hill did something that the right side of the Ravens offensive line struggled to do all night – he blocked. And twice, during the games most crucial moments, two plays that consumed the final two plays, all 190 pounds of Justice Hill was called on to block one of the NFL’s fiercest defensive linemen, 310-pound 5-time Pro Bowler Chris Jones – and did an adequate job. Clutch catches, excellent awareness and outstanding pound-for-pound blocking skills on a National Stage are worthy and undervalued contributions that sometimes get overlooked – but not by The Big Crab Cake.
