OTL: Van Noy Says KC Training Staff was “Unprofessional” After Eye Injury
After a gut-wrenching Week 1 loss in Kansas City, it’s difficult to gauge how Ravens fans should feel about the team right now. On one hand, they fought hard on the road, despite some difficult calls and bounces, and took the reigning Super Bowl champion down to the wire. On the other, it’s the 5th loss out of six games against the Chiefs in the Lamar Jackson era. Before diving into the game itself, though, I want to give some attention to Kyle Van Noy, who spoke about his experience with the KC medical staff:
#Ravens LB Kyle Van Noy, who suffered a fractured orbital bone on Thursday night, opens up about his experience with the Chiefs training staff:
“They took an entire quarter to get down to talk to me in the locker room, which to me, is unacceptable. … As a player, people have… pic.twitter.com/jGQudappG3

This wasn’t a run-of-the-mill injury; they were dealing with Van Noy’s eye. To me, that makes this even more unacceptable, and it should be explored further.
Now moving to Thursday night’s game, the big concern I left with was about the offensive line (no surprise). With new faces across much of it, there were consistent issues throughout the game, and Jackson seemed to be running for his life.
While he’s capable of being superman – and it’s fun when it’s happening – Baltimore cannot rely on Jackson this much:

That said, congrats to Lamar on reaching yet another milestone:

Interestingly, the O-Line was ranked well for pass blocking, with much lower run blocking ranks.
Some notable Ravens blocking stats from Week 1:
Pass blocking: Rated 2nd by ESPN (win rate), 8th by PFF (grade)
Run blocking: 22nd by ESPN, 21st by PFF

All the same, the eye test told me they weren’t holding up, and PFF broke some of that down in this video:

I still choose to stand with Ramey, who remains optimistic:
Don’t know when it’s going to be but I really do feel like the Ravens offensive line is going to put it together at some point.

Baltimore has had young O-Lines before, and they tend to jell over the course of the season. With youngsters like Rosengarten and Vorhees, too, the learning curve could be relatively quick with some game action.
There are more immediate positives from the Ravens’ loss, as well. For starters, the obvious one is Isaiah Likely:

– 2nd in receptions (9)
– T-2nd in targets (12)
– T-5th in first downs (5)
– 7th in yards (111) pic.twitter.com/luNe3W9vHH— Kevin Oestreicher (@koestreicher34) September 10, 2024
After a breakout back-half of the season last year, Likely seemed poised for a big year but was still behind Mark Andrews as the TE1. On Thursday night, with Andrews facing frequent double coverage, Likely showed out, and now, Baltimore looks to have the best TE room in the NFL:

But alongside Likely, a few others played well and kept the Ravens in the game. Despite seemingly poor play along the line, Tyler Linderbaum continued to be steady in the middle:

Ronnie Stanley was solid, as well, despite the penalties early on (see above).
Third, although this could be taken as a slight concern, Rashod Bateman continues to create separation:

Rashod Bateman was given the lowest avg. cushion among all WRs (min. 3 tgts) in Week 1, 2.5 yards. While he was able to generate 3.1 avg. yards of separation on his 5 targets, he only managed 2 catches.

Bateman made an outstanding catch on a deep ball from Jackson to accelerate Baltimore’s last-second comeback attempt, and maybe that will give Jackson more confidence in him moving forward:

On the defensive side, a quieter standout was DT Travis Jones. Entering year three, Jones has the potential to be another stalwart along the D-Line, and he created tremendous push a few times:

Altogether, it’s disappointing that Baltimore fell to KC yet again. But compared to the rest of the NFL, I’m confident they’re one of the better teams. Defensively, they held up fairly well against the league’s most feared QB. Offensively, they turned things on late and clearly still have playmakers across the board:
The Ravens led the league in yardage for Week 1 with 452 total yards:
• 267 passing yards (5th in the league)
• 185 rushing yards (2nd in the league) pic.twitter.com/UbW3Eg2wnV— Ravens Nation ð™‡ð™„ð™‘𙀠(@LIVERavenNation) September 10, 2024
The Ravens will be just fine.
