Not In the Holiday Spirit This Year

Hmm…

I can already tell that this year will be a dud, holiday-wise. I got all my Halloween decorations out and all but 2 are “installed.” I am not getting the little charge from holiday decorating that I usually do. I think it feeling too soon for fall is a part of it. And that weird spiritual exhaustion thing is as well.

I’m not going to be too worried about it. I’m usually enthusiastic about the holidays. Just decorating for myself and getting a charge out of it. But a couple of times a decade I just… don’t give much of a shit. It’s due to “burn out.” I didn’t do holidays a couple years I was working at a very heavy holiday-themed workplace (decor everywhere!) because it was too much for too long. Then I got back into it after leaving Michael’s Arts N’ Crafts. I decorate as a nice distraction sometimes, like during my divorce. And I’ll still do it this year, I’m just not feeling it as much.

But you know what? That’s okay.

It’s okay to be tired out. It’s okay to just not feel it as much. I’ll feel it more next year almost certainly and the year after that. I think I was on “go” for a bit too long and I’m just settling in and relaxing over the 3 month end-of-year bash this time around. No crime in that!

And… I leave room to change. I leave room to get excited later if the mood comes upon me. I generally love everything pretend and dress up and fun-dramatic, and the holidays fit that bill nicely. So I could change my mind later, of course. But if I don’t– I won’t obsess about it. Every darned mood and thought is not worth worrying about so much!
