Schizophrenia, Folie à deux, and mental disease (mostly for Matty and maybe Tim Hebert)

I like to think that I’m fairly well-read and I expect my readers (commenters) here to be so too.

Matty gave me some flak for my view(s) that the Hills and Charlie Hickson and Calvin Parker were attended by the delusional disorder Folie à deux.

I gave Matty my references and now direct him to the DSM[Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edtion, the latest edition]:

The DSM-5 classification only refers “Delusional Disorder” or “Other Specified Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorder”, abandoning the concept of Shared Psychotic Disorder / Folie à deux.

Folie à deux, shared psychosis, or shared delusional disorder is a psychiatric syndrome in which symptoms of a delusional belief and sometimes hallucinations are transmitted from one individual to another. [From the internet]

Now Matty, don’t come here with guffaws and blowsy arguments without substantive knowledge.

I luv ya Matty, and your spunk, but you’re not playing with a guy who likes to accept non-knowledge from readers here. (I’m the guy who does that.)

Two reviews in TLS [Times Literary Supplement] for October 11, 2019 goes to the discussions about the Hills and Calvin Parker.

Andrew Scull, whose book Madness in Civilization is often mentioned here, reviews Anne Harrington’s Mind Fixers: Psychi- atry’s troubled search for the biology of mental illness [Norton, $27.95].

He doesn’t like much of the first part of the book but writes nice things about the latter half.

Ms. Harrington distills the early views of German psychiatry which thought that mental illness was centered in the brain – a biological matter. Then along comes Freud and upsets that apple cart by mind-oriented disorder.

I know some (Matty) don’t think highly of Freud but some of us do and Scull offers this from the book quoting William Alanson White – (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Alanson_White):

“Freud ‘hung out his shingle … put his money where his mouth was’ and White urged his colleagues to give Freud’s ideas ‘a fair shake’.”

A capitulation of antipsychotic drugs and their problems, from the book, is insightful, Scull ends his review “Mind Fixers is certainly a sound synthesis of psychiatry’s recent troubles.”[Page 27]

Abutting Mr. Scull’s review is one by Stephen Wilson (psychiatrist and writer, formerly senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford) who opens his review [Page 27] with this…Pay attention Matty.

The book reviewed is by Nathan Filer, The Heartland: Finding and losing schizophrenia [Faber, £14.99].

“We are all capable of losing touch with reality. We can all become deluded, hear voices see visions … In fact these experiences happen regularly in our dreams and nightmares and in transitional periods between sleeping and waking. And of course they also happen during fevers and other toxic, hypnotic, or drug-induced states. But when they happen in a setting of clear consciousness, in the absence of organic disease, they are some of the florid or ‘positive’ symptoms of schzophrenia.” [ibid]

I’ll have more to write about this but the words pertain particularly to UFO abductees, the Pascagoula episode, maybe the Hills, and other UFO incidents.

My point here is to make it clear that if you come at me with flippant interrogatories, you better be well-armed. I hate nonsense, unless it’s my own.
